Scene where you cracked up the most

I burst into laughter many times while watching this film...But the scene that sent me falling off the chair was the one where his wife walks up to him and tells him she wants a divorce...The conversation and also his reaction as well as his expressions....Brilliant, just brilliant...

So, what happened to the goy?

The goy?..... who cares?

*The Goy's Teeth. so bizarre, so awesome. "The goy? Who cares?"
*Stoned Bar Mitzvah. it just... omfg. especially when they pan over to Danny's stoned friend- his FACE! i can't NOT crack up.
*Smoking with Mrs. Samksy. the incredibly awkward way he comes to her door... her complete deadpan... and the way he just decides, "okay, i'm gonna smoke weed with my hot neighbor."
*The Uncertainty Principle... "I f_cked your wife, Larry! I seriously f_cked her!"
*"Look, son! There's another Jew!" that was so startling and horrible and yet somehow completely hilarious.
*all the scenes with the Divorce Lawyer... Larry's so close to a total nervous breakdown that you can practically taste it, and so completely bewildered... i love that whole exchange about the money- how Judith has emptied his bank account, and the lawyer suggests making a new bank account in his name only- "i can do that?" "oh, absolutely." "that's not dishonest?" "oh, absolutely-!"

There's a scene near the beginning where an adult at the Hebrew school has the confiscated walkman and he's cautiously examining it. It just absolutely cracked me up. When he eventually gets the headphone into his ear there's this brief moment of shock.

And of course any stuff with Sy Ableman was just brilliant. He's just so fantastically evil.

"Well, for instance, the Jolly Roger is quite livable. Not expensive, and the rooms are eminently habitable."

And then there's that bit right at the beginning where the guest is complimenting the man for his wife when she's been nagging the hell out of him for the entire scene so far. His reply is a quickly dismissive: "Yes, she's a ray of sunshine. Please take a seat."

And there's some more subtle bits, like when he opens up his brother's "Mentaculus" book and there's these ever more extraordinary equations in bizarre patterns. And the bit where the son, who is blatantly in the middle of puberty with his voice still in the process of breaking, trying to chant words from the Torah. And you may even notice that the anonymous attempts to discredit Larry almost certainly came from Sy Ableman ("He was so supportive. He wrote to the university about you every day").

I really cannot understand how anyone could say that they didn't laugh at this at all. Perhaps they need a laugh track in order to enjoy genuinely funny gags. :P

The dream sequence when the brother gets shot.
Shot of the stoned friend at bar mitzvah.
Guy saying "jesus christ" in the same scene.
Neighbor staring down Japanese father.

My favorite (and I think it has become my favorite scene of any coen movie alongside Barton Fink waking up and screaming at the top of his lungs) is when he comes home to find out that Sy ableman has died and the camera slowly pans back through the hall and the wife's wailing becomes louder and louder until finally it cuts to the next 'section'. I love this movie so! Only the Coens could make inconsolable grief this unbelievably hilarious.

Cracked up the most when...

We see the look on the sister's face as she watches her brother's bah mitzvah. And...

"The Second Rabbi" scene. The story about the goyim's teeth. Larry asks what happened to these people and what was the point of the story?! Haha.

'Is this man bothering you?'

'Is he bothering me?'

Pretty much any scene with Sy Abelman. Just the way he talked was funny to me.

After that, "No one in this house is getting a nose job!"

If you liked Sy Abelman you should check this actor out in the Hulu series "Casual" as the father ... he is hilarious, and the series is really good.

Near the end of the movie, when the boy goes to visit the old Rabbi, after a long walk to his desk, he sits, and the Rabbi starts reciting Grace Slick's words! What a riot!

reply

When the son runs away from the boy he owes money to every day, but the kid just stops when the son goes inside his house

"This is a $4000 sofa upholstered in Italian silk. Its not just a couch"
"ITS JUST A COUCH!"
