I enjoyed the film very much despite people not liking it as much. The main reasons I believe it bombed was because not a lot of people know about the Demeter and it should have instead been released on Halloween not August.
What do you guys think?
The movie in itself wasnt any good. It might have get better attention if it had advertised better as a Dracula movie, but it failed in both.
The Demeter title missed out the chance to surprise the unaware audience that its a Dracula movie, the first line states its from Dracula and the monster is also a wild beast version of Dracula. They should have made it much less clear, with more suspense around the monster. In this version I was only missing the "I AM VAN HELSING" line.
They could have of course also fully bank on the Dracula. But here they made way too much fuzz about it with all the tropes everyone knows since 100 years. And then irritate these peoples by make believe, that no one in London would mind this "one ugly motherf****".
TLDR: It feels like they had the idea of a surprise Dracula movie and this got perverted into this all and nothing due to producers and bad previews. At least, I expect more by André Øvredal. He disappointed me usually always with the final execution/finale, but he usually is good in setting up things. It's also here visible in the first half hour.
I think the idea of releasing it around Halloween is correct. I didn't watch this because it's expensive to see movies and I'd rather see it in October. That, and I've read Dracula. You know how it ends and what happens on the ship isn't necessarily as interesting as the ship arriving with the captain tied to the wheel.
