I don't get why everyone thinks this movie is so good.

Do you have to be a Sherlock Holmes fan? I have been told by many people that it was awesome. I watched it twice and was pretty bored. I don't get the love for it.

This is the problem with kids today, If a film does not have wizard's or Sparkling Vampires its boring lol.

reply

Hah. You do realize that this is a movie with wizards and vampires, right? And those elements are actually part of what makes the movie boring, at least until the redeeming ending.

What the ending doesn't fix, though, is the stupid and unnecessary violence and explosions. These action scenes interrupt the plot too much and make the movie seem drawn-out and boring.

Different tastes. I've seen the movies about 5-6 times each. It's one of those movies I can't get bored of.

The dialogue, the relationship between Watson and Sherlock.. Jude Law's and Downey's performance. The entire thing just sings.

The soundtrack and photography is also outstanding. *beep*, I love these movies.

I'm really shocked at how many people don't see through RDJ. Maybe it's because i was an example of his persona back when i was a kid. The guy who admitably isn't the cool guy but desperatly tries to sell the persona of it. Geez and i thought terrible of myself looking back at younger me for not being the person i truly was, yet now i look back and wonder how many people really bought it. RDJ is making a career out of being an uncool person and pretending to be a cool one and everyone eats it up.

On the general subject of the film, i didn't like this interpretation but don't kid yourself there are plenty of ones. Them trying a new spin isn't bad. I just wish a better casting job was done, and not a lame decision that ended up coming to past.

There's a lot more talented people that could have a more authentic job at playing more lowbrow eccentric fighting Sherlock. But hey apparently RDJ is a better actor to a lot of people because they can't see through that kind of attitude.

Gamefaqs has a far worse population than IMDB

I totally agree. I thought it was well made but the story is slow and doesn't suck you in at all. You just kind of wait for the next thing to happen until it finally ends 2 hours later. It feels like a "mystery" movie made for 10 or 11 year olds who can't handle anything to complex. blah

Totally unacceptable. None of the production values and character development in the Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce series of movies. Robert Downey and Jude Law were miscast. I imagine the producers were attempting to make the characters more contemporary but it came out wrong. Both Downey and Law are fine actors but this material is not their meat.

You mean the character development that saw Watson develop from a thick bumbling idiot to......well a thick bumbling idiot.
Ever tried. Ever failed. No Matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail bettern

Not a diehard Holmes fan here, but I found it nearly equivalent to the first Pirates of the Carribean movie, which is one of my all-time favourites. Similar period setting, similar crazy man/straight man combo (Jack/Holmes and Will/Watson), same crazy prop-centric action, and I approved of how much the negative drawbacks of Holmes' observational genius were kept in focus. A perfect Holmes is a boring Holmes, and in his words, 'there's nothing more stimulating than a case where everything goes against you'.

Probably the best Watson ever with a character arc and mind of his own instead of being a simpleton who does nothing but follow Holmes around and marvel at his genius. While I was a bit disappointed at the revelation of Lord Blackwood's secrets, his performance could indeed convince people that he truly is in league with the devil or otherwise pacted with some dark power beyond sight.

If you hated Curse of the Black Pearl you'll hate this. But not many seem to.

It's funny you say that, because I love the first Pirates movie, and I was really unimpressed with this movie, which I just watched finally today. Maybe I was just in the wrong mood today, but I don't think so.

I had heard such raves from friends about it (back when it first came out) so I figured when I eventually got around to watching it, it would be good for just plain entertainment if nothing else.

I did like the relationship between Holmes and Watson, and thought Jude Law and RDJ played off each other well. But that was about the extent of what I enjoyed. I'm not an idiot, and I certainly don't think we need some big introduction to 'this is Sherlock Holmes, and this is his hetero life mate Watson', but I was so thrown into the middle of something when this movie started, I had to stop and make sure I hadn't accidentally gotten the second movie.

But anyhow, yeah. Not a terrible film, just meh. I can see why you would make the comparison to Pirates, but that movie was SO much funnier and had more heart than this one. There was actual character development, unlike this movie where it's just like 'here's these guys, and this chick, here's a bad guy, now watch the mystery be solved.' And it wasn't much of a mystery at that, since you know all the alleged MAGIC was only going to be shown to be complex trickery by the end.

I give it 4/10. It's a very standard action flick. I'd have given it a 5/10, right down the middle....but the Watson character was so poorly written, mis-cast, and boring that I downgraded it by a point. If you're going to make Watson a big athletic ultra-brave enforcer, at least give him some personality. Don't just have him be a bodyguard.

I know we all have different tastes but it's light years better than "They Live", IMHO. You gave that turd a 7!!
