Why the low rating?

In my opinion, after watching this 4 or 5 times over the years, I believe this to be an excellent film and story well deserving a score of 8.0 or above. Why the low ratings, is the story inaccurate or do people just think differently in general?

I don't even know what the current rating is. I think it deserves a 10. I'll admit, I am definitely not a movie buff or a critic so I like just about everything I watch. But I think this is a wonderful film and such a good story...sad of course.

reply

Yeah absolutely, it was a wonderful watch!

reply

Sure was. Have you seen many other WWII films?

reply

Mainly the popular ones to be honest with you,but they are always enjoyable, yourself?

reply

Yeah I have seen a few. I'll recommend a few and you can check them out here. I have to say that I am very easily entertained so I may not be the best judge of what a good movie is lol
Defiance - The Daniel Craig film
Sophie Scholl
Flame and Citron
The Counterfeiters
In Darkness

You have any other suggestions for movies I should check out?

reply

I've seen defiance, brilliant film, will definitely check the rest out too. Have you seen the likes of "Saving Private Ryan" or "Fury", they're not based on any true stories unfortunately but they are still well written and enjoyable films in a WW2 setting

reply

Also "Schindler's list" is unbelievable

reply

Oh yes I have seen Saving Private Ryan, Fury and Schindler's List. I enjoyed all of them. I actually went to the Memorial to the German Resistance in Berlin last year. It's on the site where the execution of Col Stauffenberg and his conspirators took place. It was quite powerful.

There is also a 1969 film called Army of Shadows that is currently sitting at an 8.2 here on IMDb. I actually own the Criterion copy of the film but have not seen it yet. Of course there is Inglourious Basterds but of course that's completely fictional/fantasy.

reply

Oh wow it must have been very powerful and yeah haha it was pure fiction but still humorous with a good twist at the end that I didn't expect. Clearly I'm not into the world wars anywhere as much as you are lol

reply

I haven't really seen a lot of war films but I do like them, especially when they're based on true stories. I think these are important stories that need to be shared. I was actually in the Marine Corp for five years but I never saw combat or anything like that. In fact, I never even went to the Middle East.
Anyway, let me know if you see any of those films and what you think. I think I might watch Flame and Citron tonight.

reply

Wow, I've never experienced anything close to that, what was it like? I imagine it taught a great amount of discipline and I will definitely try to watch a couple of them this week.

I have to agree with you too, it's an important part of history and it shows how lucky some people are to be growing up in conflict free countries.

reply

Well like I said, my time in the Marines was pretty laid back. Despite that, I still couldn't wait to get out lol Military life just wasn't for me.

Yeah, especially as more time passes, we need to remember those who came before us and made the sacrifices that they did. I don't know much at all about Dunkirk but from the synopsis, it sounds like it will be a film that I'll want to see. I'm also looking forward to the release of Brad's new WWII film called Allied. Have you heard of either of these two films?

reply

I have yeah, I'm especially looking forward to Dunkirk as I'm a huge fan of Christopher Nolan's work and I hope he makes a classic out of it. I also don't really know that much about Dunkirk apart from the fact that Germany pushed the Allied troops out of Europe so it'll be interesting to see how close he keeps it to true events and how much he manipulates them .
I haven't really heard that much abot Allied but I may give it a watch.

reply

I don't know anything about this battle so it will be very interesting to learn about something new. Of course there are many things I don't know anything about lol I didn't even know where Dunkirk was until reading a little bit about the film. I actually didn't even know it was in France.
Oh, there is also a German film called Operation Valkyrie. I think I got the DVD from Amazon. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0388437/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2

reply

Hey another movie came out last week that you might be interested in. It's called Anthropoid and it stars Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan as two members of the Czech Resistance tasked with taking out a high ranking Nazi. Based on a true story too!

reply

Yeah it looks good, have you seen it? I've been a bit busy lately with university but I've got the counterfeiters ready to watch, hopefully this weekend and I'll get back to you!

reply

Have you heard about Hacksaw Ridge too, it looks really good

reply

Yeah I have heard of Hacksaw Ridge and want to see it. I'm not sure if I'll catch it in theaters but I'll watch it on BR for sure. Have you watched Counterfeiters and if so, what did you think?

reply

Very few movies on IMDb are rated over 8.0.... seriously. What we would individually give a movie and what a community averages out to are two completely different things. There's some movies that you would give 9s or 10s to right? Community grades of 9s and 10s on major-voted movies aren't even a thing on IMDb.

The problem with the movie is that it attempts to whitewash the Wehrmarch (claiming it was disgusted with artrocities commited by SS) and Stauffenberg himself (he was a Nazi and only wanted Hitler removed from power because of impending defeat).

It has a tv feel about it.

reply

It's because it's takes liberties with historical accuracy in places. The accents also suck a sense of realism out of the film. It's at least a 5.5/10 for me.
