Sa5m?

"The 5 is silent."

What the hell is the point in that? Why not just be called 'Sam'?

The truth, is her character can't even proudly wear that as a badge of her uniqueness. This guy already beat her to it, albeit with an exclamation point.

NO, no no. No.

It's called "social satire". The movie is being ironic and sarcastic. It is subtly poking fun at the culture, the "scene" in which teens actually do stuff like adding numbers into their names in an attempt to be "counter-culture" and "ironic" themselves. It's really genius.

The writers did not add the "silent 5" part to make it seem cool...they are making fun of the very notion that anyone would think that is cool. It's irony.

Bandslam actually subtly satirizes and pokes fun at "teen indie culture" WHILE being a SPECIMEN of that very culture AND a genuinely good movie. Get what I'm saying?

^^ maggieanne thats brilliant. i really wanna see bandslam now. now THAT is cool

Although I've seen the movie twic, your viewpoint does seem tenable. I was actually shocked how deep Sa5ms character was (and very attracted) in this 'teen movie'. There was even some reviewer who lambasted Vanessa Hudgens for not 'understanding' the character to her depths.

Oh well, I'll pay closer attention when I see it for third time on dvd. : )

reply

Lol, at least one person got it.

Actually I wouldn't call it a satire more of a admiratire (admires as it satirizes). All the teen comedy tropes are here reversed. The cheerleader character the outcast character, the nerd character the foreign student character, the jock character, the bad boy character, the parent, they are all given a novel twist which at the same time respects the archetypes but shows us a more profound version of them with a little twist. After seeing the film at least 5 times, I can say for sure that this is the best teen type movie I've ever seen, iconic, profound and entertaining, again and again.

Really can't wait for Todd Graff's next film.

UUUUUUUUUUUGH "The 5 is silent" is so unbelievably stupid and annoying. Everytime I saw that in the ad for the movie when it would come on TV I wanted to throw my TV into a lake

'What? I cook!'
'Offering people gum, is not cooking.'

In L.A. Story (with Steve Martin), Sarah Jessica Parker played a character named SanDeE* ("Big S, small A, small N, big D, small E, big E. And a little star at the end."). SanDeE* was in her early 20s, a little older than Sa5m. The impulse seems to be similar, though.

whats the point of a "k" in knife
the "ph" in phantom instead of a "f"
it is what it is

It's just some stupid writer thinking their script is clever funny and unique. When really it's just a retarded piece of clichéd junk made for stupid teenage morons who watch films like this that aspire to be quirky and individual.

The movie is dumb and even the studio know it's a turd. Hence why over here in England they have packed the film with an exclusive Twilight: New Moon art card. Because they know damn well they can only sell copies by preying on stupid Twilight fans.

Have a nice day.

Sy Zomb3ie (the three is silent you see)

Wow I am sooooOoo witty and unique while I poke fun at the music scene...

someone needs to watch the movie... -_-

Just scrolled the first comments and have to make one of my own. Is this a hate-thread on Vanessa Hudgen? I was hoping someone would explain her roles strange name..

LOL Norris I don't know if it's a hate thread but people to tend to underestimate her.

I think maggieanne said it best regarding Sa5m's name:

If you were familiar with Enneagram, you would see that her character is indeed an Enneagram 5. And the fives are silent. Pretty clever...
