Jaden Smith ruined this movie...

When this movie first came out this board was FILLED with complaints about how obnoxious Jaden Smith's character was. Yet, strangely, all of those threads have disappeared. I wonder if someone pressured IMBD to delete anything that was critical of spoiled lil' Smith... hmmm

No, IMDB instituted a policy a while back that comments would age out of the system and be automatically deleted after the last reply to a thread reached a certain age.

Our boards are not designed to store messages indefinitely: after a certain amount of time older threads are removed from the board automatically. This process is called "expiry".

But you are correct, Jaden Smith sucked in this movie, and the Karate Kid movie. I am not seeing the new movie even though I love M. Night Shyamalan movies because of Jaden Smith.

reply

I did not know that. Thank you for the info starwolf...

It wouldn't surprise me if daddy Smith would also pay critics to get a nice review on his baby son.
Or to remove bad reviews/comments for that matter.

To be honest, there is nothing wrong with having an obnoxious character in a film. Why would you want to like everybody, it doesn't happen in real life.
But... I didn't like the fact the character didn't understand anything and kept stuck in one frame of mind, it made me wonder if the director had any control over him at all.
I found out later who the actor was, and just thought out loud, "aah, of course, I wonder if there were auditions or not?''

reply

If it makes you feel any better, he's stunk up After Earth also, and you know there was no audition there.

reply

That's a shame.

that's BS. Obnoxious unlikable characters are usually the villains or the bad guys (I said usually)
Or they are done for either comedic effect or to be an obstacle for the hero.

In here they TRIED to make him the obstacle, But it was completely ridiculous and unnecessary. our main character (Klaatu) Already had enough obstacles, Everyone in this movie besides the girl was an obstacle. He had no allies.
The kid providing conflict was one of the worst and most idiotic things Ive ever seen. Seriously the fate of the World, The ENTIRE world was in the hands of some annoying stupid brat? Are you Kidding me????

This character was seriously one of the worst Ive seen. Not needed, His attitude was not needed. His behavior as the "bad guy" Was only needed because Klaatu escapes and has no one to create conflict against him.

Jaden Smith was too little, Can't really hate him for the awful retarded job the writers and the stupid director did. He was just doing what he was told.

reply

Was it J. Smith or his character?
The character Jacob annoyed me to the core.
I kept thinking "Spare the rod...(etc)".

I think Smith was ok, but if that kid (the character) were mine, I would have had to borrow the biggest belt I could find. :)

I'm tired of these brats stinkin' up movies that already have major issues. I would've liked the movie more without him. Yea, Jennifer Connelly's character had NO CONTROL over the kid. I don't know what it is about Hollywood and why they always have to portray kids this way. Personally, it gets on my nerves and sometimes even ruins a moviegoing experience for me. Just nix the kid. He was ultimately a plot device. Writers need to get more creative before I get high blood pressure every time a brat stomps on to a movie and makes it suck. That should give them some incentive ; )

I read more about how Jaden Smith sucked in this movie than I did about the actual film before I saw it. Maybe it was because I was expecting him to suck but I don't think he did. He's an angry child that has yet to accept his father's death. I understand why his stepmother was hesitant to come down hard on him. Further, I think it is him that changes Klaatu's mind. He saw that all that anger that boy showed was because he was grieving. Not everything is as it appears and so it goes with human behavior.

Young Smith does indeed suck in After Earth though.

I haven't seen the remake.yet. I happen to not see his name listed on cast and crew. Wonder why they let him play in this movie?

The whole time I was thinking "man, this kid needs a good beating."

The mother had absolutely zero control of the kid.

Jaden Smith has to be one of the worst actors of all time,he has ruined every movie he has been in.I wont even watch a movie if he is in it.Even as a person he sucks.

I don't know who needs a beating more him or the kid from the sopranos.

reply

I gotta agree with most here in that I really didn't like the character. Now whether that was how it was written or how it was played, I'm not sure. I felt the same way about Dakota Fannings character in War of the Worlds. And unfortunately, they both took what I felt to be very anticipated movie remakes and put a big greasy smudge on both them. Neither character felt essential to their respective stories and to be honest it's been so long since I read the books or saw the original movies, I can't remember if they were even there.

Oh lordy. That last reply doesn't deserve a response. What a tool.

Anyway, I don't mind Jaden in this. I don't think any actor would have been able to get much sympathy from the audience. He was an angry little boy grieving for his parents, feeling alone. He was never going to be likeable.

HOWEVER - Jaden in After Earth!! Couldn't finish watching that film because of him. I don't mind the kid, but he doesn't seem like he wants to be an actor. I feel kind of sorry for him.
