Has Anyone Watched Both The Prequel and The 1982 Movie Back to Back ?

I shockingly still haven't done it yet but has anyone else here actually watched both the 2011 Prequel and the 1982 John Carpenter movie back to back and if so then do they fit in well together ?

reply

yes, actually many times. they fit together pretty well, except that it switches from a modern, polished look to the different film colour spectrum of the original.

The only thing that doesn't match up really is the extra snowcat next to the space ship. Kate burned the Thing in it and got into a different vehicle. Presumably she left. When the Americans visit the space ship there is no snowcat with a burned up corpse inside it. It isn't even visible from the air. That is the only blatant error I have seen. But to be honest I wasn't specifically looking for them.

I think that what was left of the snowcat (after the fire in it went out) could have been covered by the snow. Plus, MacReady's chopper actually landed on the opposite end of the spaceship where both the snowcat and cavern entrance were.

Yes, I just watched this at a local theater that showed them back to back. I had not seen the prequel up to this point. I've seen the John Carpenter version many, many times.

I thought they went together very nicely. While they don't necessarily match up in terms of quality and atmosphere, story-wise they go together well. There were lots of little connections, other than the obvious (finding the spaceship and the block of ice the creature was in), like the ax Macready finds in the wall. And then the prequel's end credits flash scenes of where the Carpenter film begins, which I loved.

I'd heard lots of hate for the prequel, which made me avoid seeing it until now. I thought it was decent, not impressive by any means, but I probably actually liked it more seeing it with the 1982 version than had I watched it alone. And seeing Carpenter's movie on the big screen was a treat. Noticed lots of little things I hadn't before.

I actually imported them both into Adobe Premiere and edited the two films together. It was practically seemless, with the only things changing being the sudden modern polished look becoming a duller, 1980's color palette. As for the film itself, the 1982 film has a much different (and better) directing and cinematography style than the 2011 version.

Basically like a 3 hour film eh?

I tried it once but felt asleep while watching the 1st 30 minutes of the 1982 film, maybe because the color became dull and old.

I have edited the two movies into one chronological movie. It runs for three hours twenty minutes. I have watched it on several occasions. It plays pretty well.

Try this one on for size:
The crew at the South Pole Telescope station have a tradition every winter-over of watching all three movies on the very first night after the departure of the final plane of the season.
