Did him and the others that followed him make it out alive? I always wondered that.

We never find out but their chances were slim. I'm guessing they never made it out of the immediate area.

In the trivia it notes the director intended to show Norton and others from the store making it out safe.

doubtful, and like another poster mentioned I thought someone from that group was found cocooned

she fell through a hole, and was never seen again

The guy that was cocooned was the Military Policeman who came into the store at the beginning and ordered the 3 privates to return to base...

SPOILERS (of course)

I think so:

1. We never hear screams from his group.

2. Only people who lose hope are killed.

3. The lone lady who leaves to care for her "home alone" kids never screams, and in fact is seen WITH her kids on one of the open stake-trucks that passes Drayton at the end.
