I just watched the film again. I thought Cooper was very well cast in the role, although he didn't look at all like the real Charles Grey. But nor did Keira Knightley look at all like the real Georgiana. The 18th century liked full-bodied, bosomy women, and the real Georgiana, in all her portraits, matched the 18th century beauty ideal. I rather doubt Georgiana's contemporaries would have admired Knightley with her flat bosom and bony collarbones.
But the main reason I thought Cooper was good in the role is that he exuded warmth and spontaneity, precisely the qualities Georgiana wasn't finding at all with the Duke. Fiennes may in fact be more physically attractive than Cooper but that's not what she wanted.
