Who was the mother ?

I don't think it was ever really stated who the kids' mother was - so was it Nic or Jules ?

The way I saw it Nic was the one who gave birth to Joni and Jules had Laser.

I'm pretty sure this was done. For this reason, if each gives birth to one from the same sperm, then the brother and sister would be related and a more sense of family would be present. Also its pretty obvious Joni has Nic's studious traits while Laser has Jules's more relaxed qualities.

You are correct.

The characters explained it pretty early in the movie.

When was it explained ? I just got done watching it again and I don't recall a scene in which it was specifically explained.

Also, Nic seems to parent Joni more, and Jules seems to parent Laser.

It was mentioned or alluded to multiple times throughout the movie.

Joni mentions to Paul when he calls her for the first time that she and Laser are half-siblings, and that each of their moms birthed one of them. It's pretty obvious who their birth mothers are.
