Do you think the main character in this movie was really depressed?

I just couldn't believe that the guy who was is playing him, was really depressed. It didn't seem believable. I did enjoy the movie though. I just wish that someone would actually make a real movie about somebody with depression. My sister and I both have depression and anxiety problems. I had trouble in school on my Junior year in high school battling those problems. I kept quiting school and then I would go back the next semester and then I would quit again. But luckily I got on the right medication and I started to feel better. I ended up graduating high school at the age of 20. But I still go through phases where I really feel down in the dumps. But I'm gonna fight it. I'm not going to give up.

This movie is based on the book by the same name. It was based on the author Ned Vizzini's life and according to him was 85% true. He committed suicide in 2013 so although the actor may have not seemed believable (i disagree) the 'character' in question was indeed severely depressed.

No. I thought the suggestion that the pep talk from the beardy guy ("you're cool; smart; talented...") could solve his "depression" showed a completely ignorance on the writer's part of depression. Common sense statements like that don't resonate with mentally ill people because they're ill.

The kid had low self-esteem but that's not the same as depression (although it often goes hand in hand). It could be that the actor's portrayal was bad.

It feels like the movie as a whole was just your typical teen rom-com with the theme of depression tacked on to make it seem different. 7.2 is too generous a rating for it.

sometimes psychiatrists make you think you're sick when you're not, just to satisfy their sick mind that's addicted to social power. and to get your money.

No. Having lived with anxiety and depression for almost 40 years now, I feel this movie was not very realistic and completely oversimplified depression. Perhaps the book was more accurate in its portrayal. Someone does not get "all better" after spending 4 days in a psych ward and 4 days taking meds. I think, also, that the main character's acting was pretty poor, in that respect. His proclamations that he was suicidal came off as him being attention-seeking and being overly dramatic and not a sincere cry for help.
Zack's character was much more believable.

The main character was not really depressed, nor was he supposed to be portrayed that way.

Zach Galifianakis' character was.

The point of the story was to show the parallels and differences between these two characters; one who was not truly depressed and just starting out his life, and the other who was truly depressed, and has been struggling with it for a lifetime.

I think that the character is depressed because he is modeled after the author of the book, Ned Vizzini, who struggled with depression his whole life and ended up,very sadly, killing himself. Maybe he discovered during his stay on the psych ward that his problems weren't as "serious" as some of the others, but that doesn't mean that they weren't there. RIP Ned Vizzini.

I don't think you pull out of something like that in the span of a few days, but it made a good story anyway. One of the better movies I have seen recently
