What a pile of Garbage

Just got done watching this movie. I knew it will be bad but why good actors like Steve Carrell, Steve Buscemi, Jim Carrey and Alan Arkin would associate themselves to such mediocre movies is something I do not understand.

The current rating of the movie is 7.2, I think whoever is reviewing is associated to this movie. Two thumbs down from for the stink pile of crap!

reply

I would expect these kind of movies to be released in an 'Idiocracy' timeline. If you haven't seen Idiocracy, you MUST. Terrifyingly accurate in its predictiveness on where society is headed.

reply

No it isn't.

I'd recommend backing up such ridiculous claims with something, OP. That post comes off as nothing more than another teenager caught in a web of dumbassery on the internet.

"Your honor, I don't like to be paraphrased; I chose my words very deliberately."

reply

Chip-

You are entitled to your opinion and I respect it! The film to me completely lacks comedic timing. Some of the funny parts run longer than necessary, bringing attention to the fact that they aren’t all that they are not that very funny. Everything was very predictable!

Once again you are entitled to your opinion but you will see how the critics will react in the next few days.

Already rotten tomatoes has it at 39 percent, and 2 out of 5 stars.

I am pretty easily, entertained. I like a dumb, fun movie, every once in a while. But this is one of the worst movies I have seen in years. Only Arkin's role was thoughtful and talented. I agree with the OP of the shock if the caliber of cast vs. script. I could have written a better movie. And where was the magic? Jim Carey's Steve could have pulled off some cool stunts and still have been a cheesy schmo. A few eps of Arrested Development and Gob Bluth, blow this movie out of the water. And Steve Carell and Olivua Wilde, as a romantic pairing? The kids in my theater audibly groaned, and I felt the same. They could gave just become friends, or even a father figure. Not that Steve is not a catch, but this character was not, yuck.

Figured I could save some time just quoting painterjane25. Totally in agreement.
Another lame formula piece.
Usually, even if there are no LOL moments, I can sit through these things with a mild bemusement.
I couldnt do it.
Im getting used to Steve Carell doing these template movies,
but what a waste of Steve Buschemi.
Jim Carrey was trying to save this thing,
but he couldnt pull it off.
And as far as Steve getting to suck face with Olivia Wilde,
hes just f##kin' lucky!
I didnt buy that relationship for a second.
Who's green lighting these $#!tty scripts????

"Pffft, my suspension of disbelief has higher standards than that"

What I find funny about the two of your posts is the complete lack of logic. First it is not funny and then you're impressed by something that is thoughtful and talented.

Think you miss the logic of a movie.

Look there is a sheep crossing...

I found it funny. The timing was spot on.

Maybe the comedy was a bit too advanced for you.

reply

wow! Kind of feel sorry for you if you enjoyed this!

reply

Really?

Your loss if you didn't enjoy it.

I enjoy most films. Reason being, I understand them.

You must learn to understand them. It will come, in time.

reply

what's there to understand about this movie???

reply

True...comedy is subjective...not much to understand so much as to feel. But the tiltle of this thread is "what a pile of garage"...that can be argued objectively. But, the OP provides no evidence why this is something so bad it equals a pile of garbage. Just saying it is funny or not is only an opinion and no better than saying because you don't like it, then you don't understand it without explaining why.

reply

Comedy is subjective but you can understaqnd subjectivity. It's not exactly alien if it comes from a human context is it.

You don't understand it. Do you understand quantum mechanics? Do you understand the inner workings of religion? Do you understand a person you have never met?

You live and learn and it's something we must all learn. Give it time or ignore it. It's what many people in oppressive countries do because they are told to - they ignore things and never understand. You can join them.

reply

What you didn't understand.

reply

LMAO@ advanced comedy...WOW.

If you enjoyed the movie, great...but please don't pretend that this is some sort of high brow/advanced comedy film. It's right up there with Semi-Pro and The Watch.

reply

the watch was great!....have not seen wonderstone yet...

reply

I really, really wanted to love The Watch, and it did have its funny moments (more than Burt Wonderstone at least)...but it's really lowbrow comedy. That was my point. Not that I'm opposed to that style of comedy all the time, but a lot of it has just gotten so cliche.

reply

While the future Idiocracy envisioned seemed very possible to me with the cretins I've met in real life and on the Internet, it really wasn't a very good movie.

reply

agreed...the IDEA of Idiocracy was on the money but the final product was limp. Extract was crap too. Only thing good with judge's name attached were (most of) the new beavis & butt-head shorts. The one with vampires and werewolves was screamingly funny. The drone was funny too, funny how AD season 4 ripped that idea off and made it horrible unfunny... but i digress.

You Suck...now deal with it.

reply

So what you are saying is, with your self congratulation and personalised elitism, you like a film that calls people idiots but fail to understand a film where magicians make lots of money...

Makes sense.

reply

Exactly!

reply

I agree with the person who mentioned comedic timing. Movie was enjoyable enough for me but nothing I'd feel the need to watch again. The Olivia Wilde/Steve Carrell romance didn't have a spark, just was there out of necessity, although the part with the bra and XL condom was funny. Thought the Steve Buscemi as a kid was hilarious. To be honest, that kid looked A LOT like an awkward girl I knew in middle school...from the big nose to the asthma and numerous allergies.

A STATEMENT IS IRRELEVANT UNLESS IT IS WRITTEN IN CAPS LOCK

reply

Just got back from viewing it on a lark at the last second.

Well, I got a few chuckles - few, but mostly it was pretty flat.

reply

yes.,,same here, i gave it 4/10,,,,,pretty Lame.

reply

Totally agree.

Carrell at his worst will always be Burt Wonderstone.

Every 10 minutes I kept saying I should just leave, nothing will change and except for an interesting trick at the end of the film I was right.

I love stupid comedy, but this one lacks any comedy.

Just really stupid.

The only reason the film has a half way decent rating is all the people paid by the studio to rate the film a 10 even before the film opens. It's heading to a 5, but deserves no more than a 4.

Olivia Wilde was great!

reply

I lucked out, the guy to the left of me was laughing insanely loud at every other joke. It must have been infectious because everybody was laughing. Even though i laughed a good amount through the movie, I likely will not see this movie again as it is not strong enough for repeated views.

reply

I think "Garbage" is a bit harsh. There were some good moments, mostly thanks to Jim Carrey's evisceration of Criss Angel.

I thought the tone was set low when one of the very first jokes, "Cirque du so lame", was directly taken from a recent comedy in a similar style, "Blades of Glory". Why do something like that?

reply

Wonder how "they" pay for giving a 9 or 10?

reply

I almost walked out during the first ten minutes.
I don't mind stupid comedies as long as they are actually comedies. This film was just "Hey, these guys are famous. Let's make a lazy attempt to make a comedy about MAGIK!!!!1"
I stayed because I was with friends, and I didn't know if they were enjoying it or not. They weren't. I think it could have been better, if the director and screenwriters gave a *beep*.
3/10, +1.5 for Jim Carrey's acting, and +.5 for Olivia Wilde and Gillian Jacobs in a bra.
See you space cowboy...

reply

Interesting posts. Everyone I know who's seen it says that this is the funniest film to come out in the last 25 years.

I did not see it yet, so I can't say if they're right or not.

reply

I thought it was pretty funny. It didn't make me laugh as much as many other movies, but I wouldn't rate it as low as a lot of the posters above me. I wonder if some people talk it down to themselves so much that they just don't enjoy it at all.

For me, not the best, but far from the worst, and I did laugh out loud a few times and one scene made me laugh about as hard as I ever have. Won't say what scene for spoilers.

reply

Or they have an opinion different from yours? Perhaps?

reply

Well they might but check out the metascore for the movie and read some of the reviews. And to prove my point, the score has been significantly dropping!

reply

[deleted]

have you even read my post? I WATCHED the movie and then posted on here what I thought. The reason I mention the metascore is because someone above said that he does not think that someone manipulated the score where the movie got 7.8 which is dropping. It has dropped one whole point in the past two days and I predict it will go down further.

reply

I don't base my opinions on what others think, either. That's why I put a disclaimer at the end of my post.

reply

[deleted]

I didn't see the movie and probably won't. Not a Jim Carrey fan.

But my friends liked the film. Thought it was hilarious.

Not sure what else to say, other than you are a genius.

reply

Who is watching this garbage, and liking it. What sort of rat is satisfied with this drivel. When people promote crap like this it encourages studios to continue to pump it out.

reply

Studios pander to the lowest common denominator. There's too much money invested to take a risk and make anything that might cause any audience member to think.

reply

[deleted]

I have no idea. Didn't they read the script before signing on?

reply

Probably not. Their agents probably read them the massive payday they'd receive for doing a movie that requires them to do nothing. Plus a 'vacation' in Vegas.

Done deal.

(I'd go to Vegas if someone paid me $25 million)

reply

I agree with the OP. I couldn't believe how bad this movie was while managing to secure a great cast. While I like Steve Carrell, he can be in some duds, but usually Steve Buscemi, Alan Arkin and James Gandolfini are in good films.

And it wasn't just me who thought this. The films is only in its second week here in Australia, and there were only about 15-20 people in my cinema, which was the main cinema in Sydney, and I didn't hear one laugh from anyone throughout the whole film - a couple of very small chuckles, but no laughter.

This films was horrid. There is no other way to describe it.

"How's the serenity?"

reply

I loved how Jim Carrey blasted Charlton Heston saying that Heston's films were no longer in demand. I think Jim should look in the mirror. He hasn't had a hit since the late 1990's.... and nobody is lining up to watch anything he's done since.

reply

If you knew it would be bad, why did you go? Your predisposition renders your opinion meaningless. I'm glad you had the bad time you were anticipating, but cannot accept any of it as meaningful review.

Plato said: True knowledge comes from the realization that you know nothing. But, what did he know?

reply

where did I say that I knew it was going to be bad? I am a huge Steve Carrell and Jim Carey fan! That is why I went.

From your very first post in the thread:

"Just got done watching this movie. I knew it will be bad but why good actors like Steve Carrell, Steve Buscemi, Jim Carrey and Alan Arkin would associate themselves to such mediocre movies is something I do not understand."

The part where you said it is bolded! Not only were you prejudiced, as somebody else said, but you lose credibility when you can't even remember what your biases actually are...
