If you start watching season 1 onwards a long time after seeing show

.. you REALLY appreciate seasons 1-4 a whole lot more.
Then came the writers that HATED THE SHOW, and made it into a disease from seasons 5-8.

S5 was pretty amazing despite a few flaws.

S7 was probably the worst of the bunch if not for the character of Hannah alone. If someone was going to "change him" and negate the need for him to kill and please his dark passenger it should have been Deb.

Yh agree, season 5 I don't mind but the last 2 are terrible. What I loved about the first few seasons is that dexter has no emotion and doesn't care about anyone, but in the last few seasons he loves deb more than himself and goes to any lengths for her, preferred him in the first few season

I think season five has a nice twist and having five target's was a bonus as he hunts each one down. Also I think Julia Styles fit as a potential partner and love interest. It was was as Rita's death was dealt with and I grew to like her kids instead of netural about them.

Completely agree. I really like Jonny Lee Miller as an actor (LOVE his interpretation of Sherlock Holmes on Elementary, much more than Robert Downey Jr.'s in the Ritchie films) so just binged on season 5 of Dexter. I watched the entire Dexter series in real time when it aired originally on Showtime. The later seasons were disappointing; but season 5, with Miller, Peter Weller and Julia Stiles plus good scripts is really fun and freaking good. Do yourself a favor and watch it.

You might want to stop with season 5, though. A little R_Kane advice.

I thought season six showed potential with the apocalypse killer. Doomsday felt like the last great villian with a fight club twist.

Have you even watched "Dexter" in toto and comprehended each episode from all 8 series?

I've seen all the episodes at least 3-4 times and each time I notice something I missed in previous viewings.

The only series I dislike is series 6, mainly due to subject matter and Colin Hanks. Even so, there are at least a couple of gems in it. Notably Episode 7 "Nebraska" and episode 12 "This is the Way the World Ends", which sets the stage for both series 7 and series 8.

That said my favourite is still series 1, because it shows Dexter Morgan at his most basic.
