Would it be appealing to agnostics ?

I'm a huge Scorsese fan but I'm kind of reluctant regarding watching this film because it deals with Catholicism. Neither am I Christian nor a theist . Is it as good as his other films ? Should I watch it?

reply

It is a brilliant film. I recommend it highly.

reply

Ok then I'll give it a go

Antagonists?

*agnostics..... *beep* typo ugh

reply

Haha I know but it looked so much like ''antagonists'' that I couldn't help it.

As to whether this movie would be appealing to agnostics depends on their taste in film. A devout catholic can hate it because it doesn't suit their taste likewise an agnostic can like it due to their taste, like with all movies. I remember when I was agnostic I was really taken back with Scorsese's Last Temptation of Christ because of the ideas that film was exploring.

If the agnostics like brilliant films, then yes.

I'm an atheist and I found it hard to sympathize with Garfield's resistance to renouncing his faith in the face of seeing people get tortured. It felt like a no Brainer to me.

reply

It doesn't have to be religion per say but a person giving up a point of view they have held all their lives whether it be national, racial, ideological, philosophical, etc... The way we think and believe shapes us so much that it is difficult to give them up.

reply

Agnostic or atheist here (really, I don't even know) - but I'd say that while at first it seemed like a no brainer, Japanese asking him to abandon faith after killing everyone in front of him seemed like a poor strategy. At that point, they no longer have any 'hostages' left - and his feelings, whatever they might have been, are numbed. At that point, if I were him, I wouldn't give in. Of course... stop feeding me for a week, torture me for another two, kill another 100 in my name in front of me and my mind might change.

reply

i didn't get the impression that the filmmaker was asking us to sympatjise, rather, it was presented more neutrally so that we would empathise with and understand the priests situation and mindset about the moral dilema and his own faith (its's strength and his doubts)...

i don't think we're meant to take sides...

reply

Why not? I'm agnostic and interested. Religious themes don't cause me to run away. I was raised Catholic and like it or not, religion had a big influence on our society. Scorsese won't be preaching, he tells stories that are truthful with warts and all.

I'll avoid an evangelical film like God's Not Dead. Not Silence.

this is the end, beautiful friend...

reply

Well, I am an atheist and I liked it. There is really little preaching in it, it's about the human condition.

reply

I'm agnostic. It was my favorite film of 2016.
