The brawl at the end nearly ruined things for me (Spoiler Alert)

The fight scene between Edward Norton's and Colin Farrell's characters at the end of the movie was such a departure from the overall atmosphere of the movie that it resulted in the overall quality being taken down a notch.

This was a principally character-driven film whose centerpiece was the feeling of ambivalence members of a family experienced between loyalty and doing what was ethically sound. In that vein, the ridiculous fight sequence deviated from the mood the director was trying to convey by making the film descend into formulaic action movie territory.

I'm curious as to how everybody else felt about this scene.

Really?? I almost thought that scene evoked what you spoke about family. Francis and Ray heading there was a family finally taking care of what they deviated from for awhile and trying to make it right. Then Jimmy being a man's man says what are you going to take me in? Ray oblidges him by beating his ass. Just let me know what you think, I thought the same as you at first but though this later.....

I liked the movie, but this was rather stupid. ray had realised that Jimmy was DANGEROUS, so why not simply arrest him?? Why risk it by fighting??
What if Jimmy defeated him??

I loved that scene. When they both put their badges and guns on the bar and raise up their fists to the irish jig music on in the background. It brought the LOLs, but it also balanced out with the 'You broke our hearts Jimmy. Yeah, there are a lot of broken hearts around' line. Something about the serious and the ridiculous mixed well together and I thought it worked.

It's a heavy film, there needs to be some light heartedness in it, otherwise it might have been too serious for it's own good.

EVERYTHING WAS BEAUTIFUL AND NOTHING HURT.

When the other guys left and there was just the two of them but jukebox kept playing, I was wishing he had turned it off or yanked out the power lead.
Then when the (very unlikely even in an Irish bar)Irish diddley-aye music came on I groaned, and when it became clear that the guy who was putting everything on the line to do the right thing was putting his stuff on the bar so he and the man who almost destroyed several families could have an old-time fist fight I could not believe it. It was like a parody. If I had been in a cinema I'd have been sorely tempted to walk out. What a disappointing moment.
Was there nobody who saw this before release who had the balls to speak up?

The worst thing about it was it reminded you straight away that you were watching a movie, your disbelief was no longer suspended, which for a director is the worst thing you can do. It's like that scene in Minority Report where the fight in the apartment between Cruise and the guy with the jetpack on suddenly slows to show a closeup of the jet-pack flame-grilling two burgers, or the dinosaur stampede in King Kong. The director getting cute and showing off, forgetting his first duty is to keep the viewer absorbed in the story.

The scene in the bar could have been done much better, with a sharp exchange of cutting dialogue as he starts to put the cuffs on, something about the family, the money the bad guys make, the dead cops, etc turning into a scrap as a result of that, and with music as a counterpoint to the violence, a slow ballad or Van Morrison's Coney Island or something.

Until reading this thread I thought the fight fitted in. Ray was really disappointed in Jimmy and needed to let off a bit of steam.

Jimmy was ashamed in what he did and felt like he deserved a good beating up before being clobbered to death. Threatening to iron a baby for goodness sake.

I thought the Irish jig music was a bit over the top though.

All in all, it was a good story and well acted.

For the record, I rated it 8/10 - very good.

The dinosaur stampede was awesome!

You've heard of 'suicide by cop'?
Now there's suicide by mob.

I loved the scene. It was more of a "winner takes the loser in" kinda thing.. rather than a "random pointless fight scene" like you took it as
