IT APPEARS THAT SAM DUNN DOES NOT KNOW ABOUT CHRISTIAN METAL!!!!

I was disappointed that there was no mention of Christian Metal in the movie, even though it has been, and still is a huge part of the metal scene...
Starting in the 1970s with...
• Rez Band http://www.resurrectionband.com,
to the 80s and beyond with...
• Stryper http://www.stryper.com,
• Galactic Cowboys http://www.galacticcowboys.com
• Deliverance http://www.myspace.com/thebigdlives,
• Mortification http://www.soundmass.com/rowe
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&f riendid=33577610!

For three decades now, a huge festival called Cornerstone http://www.cornerstonefestival.com has taken place in Illinois each summer! All aspects of metal's sounds and sub-genres are represented by some of the most amazing bands!

Sam should correct this horrendous oversite and explain why he ignored it to begin with!!

yeh stuff like as i lay dying and the fact dave mustaine is Christian aswell

reply

was about to say that!!

there are heaps of Christians in the world of metal, you would be surprised...

metal is NOT a reaction to organised religion, ffs, its a musical genre...

there is nothing stopping Muslims, Bhuddists, Hindus, Taoists, etc etc starting up metal bands...remember metal is a hugely diverse genre...

if you define metal as anti-religion, then you cut out about 90% of the musicians out there...

and i know there are not many genuine satanic musicians in the more mainstream metal, but they count too

as a Christian, as a metaller, i tell you this: the two go hand in hand, and if you were to analyse lyrical content properly, you would be surprised at the number of bands out there in support of Christianity.

if you cut out 90% of people, you turn your back on what i believe the metal society to be...all-encompasing, easy going, acceptance of personality...i have friends from all religious walks of life, most of them metal heads. its just ignoramouses who arent comfortable with Christians being around who like to believe metal is for the satanists/atheists...i got news for you guys...you are greatly mistaken!

Nicko McBrain, James Hetfield (analyse the four horsemen, think about the theology contained therein), John Petrucci, Hansi Kürsch, Alice Cooper, David Ellefson, most of Helloween, Peter Steele, just a small list of people literally grabbed off wikipedia (ok, not the most accurate of sites) who are Christians...

(BTW Christian metal, i realise, has to actively promote Christianity, but im arguing my own cause here, no need to pay attention to little facts like that! and because of those bands who have overtly Christian lyrics, purely based on the lyrics, people judge them to be crap, which is very sad indeed!)

James Hetfield rebelled against his Christian upbringing and his parents adherents to praying the disease away.

Every single person you cited has gone through drug and alcohol rehab while being force fed 12 steps of Christian sobriety.

McBrain and Petrucci at least aren't hypocrites compared to the rest. They don't wear their religion their sleeve and shove it down their fans throats. The rest are nothing but a bunch of junkie born again individuals who are one slip away from crashing down again.

lol, ohhhh the irony....

(do i even need to point it out?)

just coz someone puts their belief into music....does that make it bad music? no!

satanic, christian, muslim, jewish, *[edit:] even atheist or agnostic, it doesnt stop it from being good music...

Xian metal (especially Xian death metal) is a bizarre concept. I couldn't believe death metal band Prophecy were Xians. Err..besides the name of course.

As much as I hate organized religion, I really don't hold it against artists.

The only reason that you and others find Christianity and metal to be mutually exclusive is that your idea of Christianity comes from religious people who errantly teach that God sounds like a choir and that Satan sounds like metal music. The trouble with such teaching is that it is not biblical... You will not find such teaching in the Bible. Furthermore, I am willing to bet that 90% or more of you who have posted negative comments about Christian Metal, saying that Christian and metal cannot go together, have never read the Bible yourselves. There is nothing more "metal" than God! Nothing "kicks ass" more than God... in fact, it is God who has and will kick Satan's ass...
Revelation 20:1-3 -
"And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended."
Revelation 20:10 -
"And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever."

...NOW THAT'S METAL!!

I have read the bible and trust me mbgraphics I've met and know plenty of very reasonable and intelligent Christians. The unfortunate reality is the majority of Christians are anything but (in my experience anyway). I don't have a problem with Xian metal. Prophecy who I mentioned above are brutal as f#ck. I was just surprised to learn they were religious.

"Christian metal" doesn't have any distinction from itself and regular metal other than lyrics. I don't think it deserves to be recognized as a sub genre in metal only because of the lyrical content. Speed/Thrash/Black/Death metal all have clear distinctions in sound and style and clearly separate themselves from each other and regular metal, "Christian metal" doesn't.

For those Christian bands who are TRUE followers of Christ, they are different because they see the music as more than just music... they see it as a vehicle to celebrate Christ with an intensity that other musical styles cannot. This in and of itself sets it apart from most secular metal, because most secular metal is a vehicle unto itself, lacking any deeper purpose beyond making the musicians into rock gods to be worshipped by their fans. And Christian Metal's current impact is being felt even in the popular metal arena. I have seen such bands as Demon Hunter, As I Lay Dying and others on Headbangers Ball. Furthermore, though many would like to ignore it or even curse it, Brian "Head" Welch's recent conversion to Christ is yet another testament to Christ's impact on the world of metal music!

What is up with all this whining about not having mention of certain subgenres in the film? Oh no, no grindcore, no avant-techno-black metal, no gothic death metal, and now, no Christian metal?

This film isn't about trying to educate people about every subgenre of metal, it's about the sociological aspects of the people who make and enjoy metal. It touches a little on the major subgenres in order to show the development of metal from a historical perspective, which helps to understand the roots of important movements and how that is reflected in the lives of metal artists and fans.

Now, I am an atheist but I do like some Christian metal like Crimson Thorn, Extol, and Immortal Souls, but the truth is these bands have not really had much of an impact on the metal scene at large other than among a specialized group. Now, something like Norwegian black metal impacted the entire metal scene, even for those who aren't into that subgenre (like myself). The influence of Christian bands on the larger metal scene is questionable, at best.

Oh by the way no one seems to have mentioned Black Sabbath's "After Forever."

reply

Christian Metal is not a genre, your religious beliefs do not affect what sort of music your band is classified as.

However, one of the most awesome metal bands of all time is Christian - AS I LAY DYING.
