the abortion subplot

The really should have cut that out altogether. I know there are additional scenes in the extended cut at the abortion clinic and her positive pregnancy test, but in the version I saw, it was mentioned just that one time when she tells Damon and his wife, and it came completely out of left field. Who comes up to someone on the street and tells them they had an abortion? I guess Damon being a potential father was her reason, but I think any mention of her abortion in the 150 minute version was completely irrelevant. There are two sex scenes, but the movie is not about sexual promiscuity or teen pregnancy. Neither of those have anything to do with seeking justice for an death caused by a negligent bus driver and company.

I saw the same version for the first time and felt the same way, although not as strongly. Still I loved this movie very much and thought it was brilliant. I think I'll have to seek out the extended version and watch those extra sceans

I agree, the scene was weird and surprising, although most of the film was the same way.

Im still not sure what to make of the film.

"Who comes up to someone on the street and tells them they had an abortion?"

Someone who is undergoing a crisis and is deeply immature. I thought it was a stunning moment.

I have only seen the Extended Version which was wonderful. If the scene you describe is at all typical it does seem as though a lot is lost in the Theatrical Version.

Who comes up to someone on the street and tells them they had an abortion?
Lisa's crisis compels her to both self-harm and spitefully hurt others. The revelation that her plot to shed half her guilt by punishing the driver has gone disastrously wrong brings her to the final crack-up and ultimate catharsis in the opera house.

Here she just wants to vent her spite on Mr Aaron (all the more so because he is with an attractive female) by humiliating him in public. But, partly because of his calm and confident response, she loses her nerve and backs off. It is the first indication that her good conscience is winning against her negative impulses.
