Forrest was good, but DiCaprio was better

DiCaprio's performances in Blood Diamond and The Departed were on a different level, he should've won for either of those ahead of Whittaker

McAvoy was good as well, and should've been nominated for best actor as he was in more scenes than Forrest, but still nowhere near as good as Leo

reply

There is NO WAY Dicaprio was better than Whittaker. I have seen both movies many times and both are part of my library, but what Whittaker does is actually become the character. You forget he is Forrest but actually feel that he is Amin until the credits start rolling. And the way he wraps you up in where he is a funny, down to earth guy and then you learn the truth that he is a very bad guy. DiCaprio could not pull off that type of role. Hats off to the well deserving Forrest Whitaker for this movie.

Are there any movies in which you take a step back and believe the characters are actors and not part of the story without purposely doing so? I can't remember any movie outside of YouTube where I thought the characters were just people trying to act. I only saw Blood Diamond and liked Leo's performance, but the weight of a character or movie topic often influences the winner. You don't see many awards for comedies.

reply

Hmm, you sure this isn't a troll thread? Anyway, Whittaker was on another level, and deserved his best actor oscar by a long way.

I completely disagree, I've watched both Blood Diamond and The Departed numerous times. Leo was great in both movies. But Forrest Whitaker was Idi Amin. He gave not just a solid performance, but portrayed the many aspects of his characters with frightening emotion. Worth the Oscar.

I loved DiCaprio in Blood Diamond. Amazing movie. As well The Departed. He has truly become a super actor.

I think that DiCaprio should have at least gotten a Best Supporting Actor nom instead of Mark Wahlberg for the Departed.

But Warner Bros didn't want to campaign for DiCaprio.

You clearly don't understand how these awards work. Leo was not a supporting actor in the Departed. He had more time on screen than anyone in that film. He should have been nominated in the best actor category for both roles and in my opinion he should have won for Blood Diamond.

reply

Sorry, but the Departed was an ensemble piece with pretty much equal screen time shared between Damon and Dicaprio.

That basically makes them each supporting actors.

Besides which, DiCaprio got a Best Supporting actor nod from the Screen Actors Guild.

reply

The Screen actors guild has no idea what they are talking about. Leo was clearly the lead in the film and the fact is they have no criteria for what defines a supporting actor. He has the most screen time and dialogue in the film and every single other award that season had him in the Best Actor category not the best supporting Actor.

reply

There is no criteria in ensemble pieces for lead and supporting actors. Just because an actor is portraying a protagonist, doesn't make him a lead.

You always know the truth... when you cut yourself or someone else with it, you bleed.

reply

Totally disagree... FW totally deserved his award!! Like PP have said, you totally forget it's FW and start believing it's Amin.

I like both actors, fwiw. I have heard Leo is really good in Django Unchained (which I haven't seen yet) as a despicable slave owner.

reply

Is this a joke?

Whittaker won and should have won. One of the best performances I've seen...

Di Caprio was, well...Di Caprio.

As much as I like Leo this was Forest's year!
And he deserved it to!

his best work to date is..

inception

shutter island

DiCapriio is massively over-rated, people mistake likeable and good-looking for good acting. He is certainly good and competent, but there isn't one performance of his that couldn't be done a mile better by any other actor, besides maybe Gilbert Grape and Wolf of Wall Street (seeing as screaming mindlessly is his forte). He was miscast in R+J, Shutter Island, and the Aviator, and his role in inception was completely dispensable, any actor could have played it.

I like the guy, but people keep thinking that he was somehow robbed of oscars or something, there are better examples of the oscars being incompetent than the fact pretty boy leo hasn't won one. He is a good movie star, but he is a better movie star than he is a great actor

Blood Diamond and Body of Lies , ridiculous overacting by DiCaprio.

DiCaprio should have won for Blood Diamond in 2006. The Academy might have went with Whitaker because Whitaker was older, less bubble-gum, less-mainstream. But DiCaprio should have won it.

reply

Whitaker deserved the Award, he could go from laughing to scary in seconds and was a terrifying presence on the screen. He made the audience scared of him.

Ur so rite bout da screamin part. Also no matter how hard he tries, he alwayz act like himself and audience alwayz see him as di caprio and not da char
