My husband and I loved it, but we're in our 30s and both fans of the genre the twist ending reveals this film to be part of (don't want to give it away). I could see how younger people wouldn't like this movie--it's very slow and thoughtful in its buildup, there's no real gore, and you probably have to have a certain amount of life experience to find the characters intriguing. A lot of things I thought were boring as hell when I was a teenager appeal to me much more as an adult. There's a lot going on in this movie but you do have to be somewhat patient with it. The twist ending blew me away and I took it as a fresh and interesting variation on an old theme, one that I've read books on and watched movies about for years. It has its share of holes in the plot, which you'll either forgive or not depending on whether you like the characters and the concept. I did, so I forgave. The weakest parts for me were the social worker and Darlene's friend, who I thought were unnecessary characters. I was also not very interested in the chicks in the basement. For me, the film was at its best when examining the family dynamics, particularly in light of the reveal at the end.

Then again there's also just personal taste. Sure, most of the reviewers on here didn't like it, but you might. I can't count the number of films I have or haven't watched in the theater based on reviews that I turned out to have the opposite opinion on.

I loved it too. I'm 15, and I can also understand how some other teenagers wouldn't like it, I usually love the whole gore and torture setup of horror movies, but I also like the ones that make you think. A few of my friends on the other hand hate the movies that involve thinking though lol.
I really liked it though, and will buy it when I have the money.

but it's not worth seeing, correct?

the asian film was 'Reincarnation'.

i don't mind low-budget horror at all and i usually don't expect anything spectacular from it but somtimes i'm surprised. if u say it's worth it then i still plan on seeing it. i just wanted to find out some more info about it before i bought it. the Hollywood Video near my house doesn't have it for rent but u can buy it there. so i kind of wanted to know if it was really worth the money, u know?

no u don't sound hypocritical or lame. what u mean is if u have a chance to see it for free, it's worth taking a look at. otherwise, u might not want to spend ur money b/c there's a possibility u won't like it kind of thing. i get it. i was asking b/c i didn't know Sci-Fi channel was doing the whole HorrorFest thing and i've been at someone else's house lately so i missed it. damn.

maybe i can find somewhere to download it. thanks so much!

The Abandoned is horrible. I've seen all but the japan flick, my favorite is Unrest. I thought it was great. The biggest let down was gravedancers.

reply

But I just watched The Abandoned the other night and it was scary. The HorrorFest films get a bad rap but they aren't all horrible. Abandoned was better than this one, but it didn't have lots of much gore, relies more on psychological suspense and it kept my attention.

lick my dick. you dick licker.

Didn't care much for this one...

Fav of the 8? Probably Reincarnation. Dolls get to me in a big way. Lol.

As for the rest...

The Abandoned was pretty creepy. Got to be my second fav. Felt pretty moody and the whole concept was more original than most these days I think.

Gravedancers was okay too. Not great but the FX of that ghost woman freaked me right out... ugh, that face. Kind of a 13 Ghosts parallel goin on there with the whole "not just ghosts, but ghosts of the most horrible people kind of ghosts" thing.

Dark Ride, Wicked Little Things, and Unrest were kind of middle of the road. Not the best or the worst I've ever seen.

Penny Dreadful. Bah. Took me forever to plod through that thing. Got to give it my nod for worst of the bunch.

I was actually pretty disappointed with the whole series only in the sense that they hyped it constantly as "too disturbing and too graphic for general audiences" and I found that it was all mostly pretty typical cookie-cutter horror stuff. I don't hate any of it. Just think it was pretty over-hyped.

Anyway. Just my opinion and you know what they say about those. Heh.

I saw Unrest, Wicked Little Things and Reincarnation. I have to say unrest was bad and reincartion wasn't bad, just laughable esp when the spirits would enter the bt the pregnant women's legs. Just incredibly ridiculous looking, not creepy. Wicked Little Things wasn't bad, just wasn't good. Unrest was really bad and unrealistic. The Hamiltons was saved by the twist at the end. I thought it was a bit slow towards the end and also some of the acting was terrible, but overall I liked it. The main character and the older brother were very uneven in their performances. Also, if they have a social worker, how were they able to move from town to town and change their names each time? Anyway, I got it through netflix, not bad for a cheap rental.

Oh I loved this movie. Yea it was low budget, but I still thought it was great. I didn't even plan to watch it. I bought Dark Ride on PPV and it came with it for free as a double feature. I ended up liking the Hamiltons more than Dark Ride. It reminded me a lot of the Twilight book series.

reply

i did.it was not bad at all.

reply

I really loved it, really, really loved it but you'd have to make up your own mind as with all movies.

reply

Yes I did enjoy it and personally it was my favorite of the 8 movies. if I had to be forced to watch any of them again, it would be this one.

The best review was by djblack1313. The people that went in expecting a Saw type movie were probably disappointed because it's a character study type film with a horror flick theme. I got it through Netflix and I think it's okay. I don't know if I'd rec buying it. Definitely see it first. It's just not as fast paced or gory as Saw. The mood reminds me more of that Nicole Kidman flick with her and the kids as ghosts. Only this was really low budget.
