Turn Left - "Labour camps"

So after a few months of the London refugees being put in homes together with foreigners, the UK Gov passes a law of "England for the English" and sends all of the foreigners to "labour camps", and Wilfred and the older people say things like "that's what they called them last time", and the foreigners look terrified as they're driven away in the army trucks.

Does that mean that the foreigners are doomed, that the labour camps are actually death camps and that the British are acting like the Nazis in killing all foreigners on their soil?

I know that Turn Left is a depressing episode as it is, but this is pushing it.

reply

No. It means that's what Wilfred thinks is happening.

reply

So RTD was milking a depressing situation for all it was worth?

reply

Yes

reply

I actually read somewhere the other day Bernard cribbins asked for the line to be added but can't remember where I read this or if it's true.

Also the line of him not killing someone was also apparently related to him as during the war he never killed anyone, something he was proud of

reply

well seeing as Cribbins was still only 16 years of age when WW2 ended I can't imagine he did kill anyone during the conflict!!!

reply

You do know that WW1 and WW2 had plenty of under-18 soldiers who joined the Army because they lied about their age to fight, don't you?

reply

Yes but seeing as he served as a Para from 1947 - 1949 for his national service it is fair to say no he didn't serve in WW2.
Maybe the poster is confusing him with his character Wilf

reply

Perhaps Wilf is older than Bernard Cribbins? It does happen, you know, actors playing roles older or younger than them by a few years, depending on how they look for their age.

reply

Wilf says he lied about his age to join up in WW2, so I'm thinking the poster is confusing the actor with the character. Cribbins himself was doing an apprenticeship in theatre during that period.

reply

Why would I confuse the actor with the character? Where did I imply that?

reply

Not you, peter_t_2k3

reply

Oh, OK. Sorry.

reply

No worries

reply

I was just passing what someone had said and presumed it was the second World War, and I'm sure that was what the poster said. Could have been reddit.

Maybe he didn't shoot anyone and that was used for wilf

reply

Maybe
