Hilary Swank just isn't pretty enough...

As an actress I do like Hilary, I think she deserved her Oscars for Million Dollar Baby and Boys Don't Cry, but when I see her in a movie like this, she just seems so unfitting. I think that an actress like Jennifer Garner would have been a better fit.

Hilary is much more prettier than Jennifer and in the movie, she was more sexy than pretty.

all work and no play makes jack a dull boy

Hillary Swank, Jennifer Garner and Amy Jo Johnson all look alike but Garner is the prettiest of the 3.

reply

Oh my God, they do all look alike. I can't believe I've never realized this before. That's so funny.

Amy Jo Johson looks like Hillary Swank and Jennifer Garner's love child.

reply

Well, first, i believe she looks really pretty in this movie. Actually, the cutest i've ever seen her. Also, what you're saying makes no sense. She shouldn't be in this movie because she's not "pretty enough"? That's ridiculous, the story is about true love, why does it matter how pretty people are?
Seriously, it's stupid.

I totally pictured Jennifer Garner doing this movie! In some of the scenes, I could even squint my eyes and pretend Hilary was her on a bad day. I think JG would have rocked it!

reply

Ditto, that's exactly who I pictured as the part of Holly. I really hope Hillary doesn't do any more chick-lit books as films. I know she has the rights to Emily Giffin's Something Borrowed, Something Blue novels. I hope the hell she DOES NOT play Rachel or Darcy. If she does, I won't watch and I will start a wordwide boycot!

iew jennifer garner? hello... rachel mcadams FTW!!!

reply

Whats got look to do with anything? It is not how you look it is how you are inside that mathers, besides I think Hillary is beautiful and so played Holly so well so I cant imagine anyone else playing her not Jennifer Garner or Rachel McAdams, Hillary did an amazing job and she and Gerald had such and amazing chemistry.

reply

I agree 100%. I think Hillary made this story more believable. She is an attractive and talented person.

reply

Pretty might not be so much a prerequisite for the part as being feminine would be.

Just because someones not typical pretty doesnt mean they dont deserve the same acting opportunities. I was glad they chose someone like Hilary. She is less conventional. Regular looking people fall crazy in love and lose their husbands too

Isn't pretty enough for what? To experience love? To suffer grief? Or to star in a movie?

Please!

First off, you need to remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Yes, it's a cliché, but very true. Whether or not you find somebody 'pretty' is entirely subjective.

Second, the Hollywood idea of 'pretty' or 'beautiful' is so far removed from the real world that it beggars belief. You have clearly been heavily influenced by the fake, plastic mentality that pervades most of western culture - and that's okay. So have I. But you are doubtless no oil painting yourself. Yet, unless you wish to be truly shallow, I'm sure you would allow yourself the experience of love, and all the grief and pain that go along with it, despite not being skinny, airbrushed, and nip-tucked.

Third, most 'chick-flicks' and 'rom-coms' suffer from a lack of verisimilitude. That's okay - they're meant to be escapist. But occasionally one comes along that touches people in some way; rises above the average. Often this is because of outstanding writing, performances, and story. Also because of a willingness to avoid cliché, and take a risk or two. Personally I think 'P.S. I Love You' achieves all of these things, to a greater or lesser degree. It kept me entertained, allowed me to escape from my hum-drum life for a while, and surprised me by being witty, original (somewhat), and unexpected. I was moved by it in several places, and it is a film I will watch again. A lot of that was because of Hilary Swank - who I generally don't much like. I thought that she was prettier in this than I have ever seen her before, yet looked real and believable too. And I thought her performance was honest, underplayed, and interestingly nuanced.

Finally, with regard to Jennifer Garner, I have enjoyed her a lot in 'Alias', and also in '13 Going On 30'. I think she is a moderately attractive actress who shows clear talent, and is very likable. But she's also somewhat bland. As to her looks, to me she looks the spitting image of a young Julia Roberts - someone with far more talent and versatility, but to whom I have never been remotely attracted.

Personally I thought the casting was unexpected but a perfect fit nonetheless.
