Sure it may be realistic but look at the life they're leading. The frustration I feel when people say "we'll quit" makes it very hard for me to watch a movie like this. Especially when you "fans" talk about the amazing love story aspect. My idea of love isn't sharing my girl with some sleazebag because I'm so desperate for a fix. That's despicable, disgusting and just plain, IS NOT LOVE! I've known and can feel sympathy for some addicts but these two weren't sympathetic characters. As far as I could tell they hadn't been abused or brutalized. I better be honest and say it's been a long time since I watched this entire movie but to the best of my recollection they hadn't been victimized as children.

I see Stupid People...

It would seem that the movie has had it's desired effect! Drug addiction is never ever pretty, and obviously love comes in many shapes and forms.

This movie realistically portrays what drugs do to people and especially what happens to people "in love"--dependence and co-dependence etc.. and the frequent shocking behaviour that ensues as a result of its largely unintended, total self absorption. It also makes you realise that "love", however tattered and scarred, is still the primary motivator for change and recovery.

On this level, I think it exceeds very well.

Entertaining?? Possibly not. But it certainly makes you think,and realise,what a tragedy drug addiction is for all concerned.

I believe you and that's all the more reason this is so pathetic. Everyone hears the horror stories about "hard drugs," so why would they even try them?

I mean like heroin, why in the world? I can understand if they've been abused as kids and don't value their own lives, but like I said about the two in this movie, I didn't see any evidence of that.

Spoken by someone who has obviously never been addicted to opiates. Because unless you have experienced the nightmare of heroin addiction, you can't possibly understand the actions of addicts. Reason, and sometimes morals are tossed to the side, in the desperate scramble to alleviate the pain. People in severe withdrawal aren't exactly thinking clearly..this movie was disturbingly accurate, I'm sad to say.

I believe you, but that's why the story is so pathetic. I didn't mean it was unrealistic. As a clean, non-drug addict, this story is ugly.

The things I originally said, I still stand behind. This is not "love" and you confirm that, by saying "Reason, and sometimes morals are tossed to the side, in the desperate scramble to alleviate the pain." Which could also be said this way "Love and concern for the well being of the beloved, can be forsaken, in the desperate scramble to alleviate the pain."

A sad ugly circumstance to put oneself in. I could only understand this, if someone grew up abused and therefore devalues their own life.

Pinku_Eiga, it's nice to hear someone speak about the subject who doesn't instantly get angry about it. When I was going out with my (now dead) b/f, we split up for awhile because he said that he'd try any drug once, including heroin. The irony of my self-righteousness still bites considering what happened to me after his suicide at the age of 24.
I can totally understand why the O.P feels the way they do because it is a ridiculous drug to even try, considering how infamous it is. All I can say is: it made me feel like how I imagined 'normal' people to feel. I'm VERY manic in RL and it was like having a weight lifted from my shoulders...

It's certainly a poisoned love, more a story of a shared obsession. The novel doesn't try to apologize for the heroin abuse, or glorify it either. It happened, it brought them together and tore them apart. I didn't like either of them, but I couldn't dislike them either. They certainly both ending up suffering because of their heroin abuse.Terrific novel, if you haven't read it. And I liked the film, but the book was better.

You are correct. Addicts are suicidal people and they don't love themselves and they aren't capable of loving others.

There's the idea of a "psychopathic couple" where they both use each other and think they are the dominant one. Letting someone have sex with your girl, you turned her into a prostitute, is an example of that. Heroin is a strong drug but for real, it is easy to stop using it. You either slowly lower the dose over a period or you just withdrawal. You will get sick but be okay in the end.

If you really love someone, you will figure it out. You will put them before you.

It's sinister people and suicidal people who are drug addicts.

It's not for everyone. If one does not want to look at the desperation of addiction don't watch this movie.
