I like films which make use of the lovely British countryside scenery, usually set in small rural areas. I prefer it when said films are dark with revenge elements or something similar, which was one of the reasons why I loved dead man's shoes.
Are there any other revenge or dark films set in the British countryside? The only other I can think of is 'outlaw' which is nothing special.
Shane Meadows, the director of this film, also directed a movie called This is England. Similar mix of countryside and urban area (maybe they're set in the same town, which I didn't catch the name of). Also a well done film. I liked This is England slightly better.
You should check out Straightheads. I think it's Film4 which knock out some pretty good films. It stars Danny Dyer and Gillian Anderson and it's a revenge film set mostly in the country.
It's probably worth looking at Tyrannosaur and Room for Romeo Brass. They're both quite dark films and have a similar setting to Dead Man's Shoes although more Urban. You may want to check out the Hide as well.
Kill List. Filmed in Sheffield and Leeds, it's what brought Dead Man's Shoes to my attention as I'd heard they were comparable. Brilliant film, as is this one. I can't remember the last time I've felt so uncomfortable watching a film as I did with Kill List.
It a movie very unlike Dead Man's Shoes, but if you like dark revenge movies set in the English countryside I'd thoroughly recommend Michael Reeves' masterpiece Witchfinder General. It was shot in Suffolk, and Reeves uses the English countryside in much the same way as the great Western directors like John Ford used the American wilderness. It's very present in the movie, a character in itself, and it really lends mood and tone.
"That, - Captain Bligh, - that is the thing; - I am in hell, sir - I am in hell."
I have seen witchfinder general and I know exactly what you mean, but I'm looking for a more modern revenge parable. Films set in earlier periods can be acceptable though.
The only na na here is you judging by this imbecelic post, he killed himself not only because he was being bullied, possibly even sexally abused, but he was having a bad acid trip (which he was force fed) therefore was completely out of his skull probably having extremely unpleaseant hallucinations.
The Brother was right to want revenge on the scumbags who were responsible.
I cant believe no one else has said it. its not in the british countryside, but its in the aussie one lol. Its called "The Horseman" , and its very violent, bloody, and filled with revenge. you will enjoy it, or your money back lmao
I've seen that one! Probably the most brutal revenge movie I've ever seen, it made me feel uncomfortable in so many places (but the fish hook scene topped them all)
