The cartoon was very good, but it left too many questions at the end. I loved the episode when they showed how Aapa escaped after being captured. It was depressing because they showed all the baby Sky Bison running around the Air Temple. They tried to make an upbeat ending, but Appa was the last and will die alone.
shareMost species that died out had a last specimen. Right now there is less than 1% of all the species that ever existed. Appa didn't have Aang's choice of choosing a mate from another "species".
shareIn the Legend of Korra sequel series (which is really disappointing in itself despite sounding great on paper) there are more sky bison because apparently some fire sages kept some in secret so the future airbenders get to fly around on them in it. I think it's a really lame ass-pull to justify having more sky bison through not wanting to depart from imagery of the original show.
