Best film of the decade?

2001 - 2010 decade didn't offer many memorable films that come to mind.
But The Fountain is definitely one that stood out.

Are there any other films from this decade besides The Fountain that you remember well?

A lot of good films listed there but not all are great films, e.g. Sideways? One of the films of the decade?!! Surely not...

Of those listed:-
Spirited Away
Mulholland Drive
Hidden
There Will Be Blood

would probably be on my shortlist - along with The Fountain - for the best of the decade.

reply

If by "of the decade", you mean "in the history of cinema", then yes, I am inclined to agree.

reply

If by "best film" you mean "Worst film" I would be forced to say "I haven't seen them all. But on the basis of what I've seen then, yes, without a doubt."

reply

I won't respond in kind. I'm just disappointed your visceral reaction to this film was so diametrically opposed to mine. Of course, if we all liked the same movies, we wouldn't even be here right?

reply

Oh, hooray for diversity - makes life and the world that much richer. And we all love films, or we wouldn't be here, so there's that. And I suppose I'm pleased that there are people who do like this film. But I take films up to watch with my elderly parents, and I figured Jackman, sci-fi, bound to be good so we watched it sight unseen. And it's the only film I've taken up to them which I've apologised for afterwards. And it left such an impression on them that they often say "As long as it's not another one like that Fountain thing."

I've started every sentence with a preposition. Tsk.

2000 was a great year for movies, maybe the best ever.

Just looking at the top 25 US box office each year:

2001 was bleak (Cast Away carry over from 2000 was good)
2002 was good (Spider-Man, Austin Powers, A Beautiful Mind, Minority Report, Road to Perdition)
2003 was pretty bad.
2004 had Spider-Man 2 but not much else
2005 had Batman Begins (best superhero movie), Million Dollar Baby, and Walk the Line
2006 was pretty empty
2007 had American Gangster (hard to beat that)
2008 was good (The Dark Knight, Iron Man, WALL-E)
2009 had Up and Gran Torino
2010 had not much to recommend it
