Aish cannot act

Bend it like Beckham was a success. However, Bride and Prejudice failed. And, based on a few reviews, Mistress of Spices will fail. I admit that I admire Aish's beauty, but she just CANNOT act. The reason why she is so successful in Bollywood is because people are enamored with her beauty/ song&dance scenes, rather than the quality of the plot. This is one reason why most Bollywood movies cannot compete with Hollywood movies in terms of gaining a global audience. Why can't the Chadha/Berges crew pick someone other than Aish? It's not like most Americans know about Aish anyway, so might as well pick another beautiful Indian actress who has a more natural screen presence(i.e. Parminder Nagra, Purva Bedi,etc.).

then y do u even bother if u think she cant act?

a life with love will have some thorns but a life without love will have no roses

reply

Why don't you learn how to spell?

You act like such know-it-all, superior Indian, yet you can't even string together a sentence properly.

i believe that Aishwarya rai is an incredibly amazing actress, what most people seem to be foretting is that even though she speaks fluent english, she has already adapted to using hindi, her own language in films, so even though she may be speaking in english in her everyday life, it must be somewhat difficult to do infront of a camera and more to the point infront of american and british actors. so i admire her for this. i think that bride and prejudice definitely did not fail. i think it surpassed many expectatons. i think every main charcter contributes to the film for instance Aishwarya represented bollywood industry, martin henderson, the western industry and daniel british. i think the combination of these worked incredibly well and allowed viewers to see the different ways of life.
Aishwarya Rai can definitely act! who are we to say that such a successful woman cannot act!

reply

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Aishwarya simply cannot act. She is undeniably beautiful in an ethereal kind of way and therefore has a compelling presence on screen. But she simply lacks a natural ability to emote, to deliver lines and to delve into the persona and depth of the characters she plays. I have seen several of her movies, including hum dil de chuke sanam, devdas, and bride and prejudice. None of her performances give evidence of true acting talent.

reply

okay who do you think anupafabian in modern Indian industry CAN act?

seriously stop bashing Aish just cuz she is immensely popular and talked about. just because she is sensational and just because she is talked about A LOT doesnt mean she cant act. if you watched the movies you said that you watched then you would know that she CAN act. she may not be the best actresss cuz she has a LOONG road ahead of her which will leave room for immense improvement but she is quite good in comparison to other bollywood actresses. Madhuri Kajol Rani Mukherjee all of them have gone through periods of bad movies however they improoved and are considered modern legends. once aishwarya improves through her experience in hollywood she will achieve the status of a modern legend

reply

yes she definetly CANNOT take it from a film master doing a film and drama degree with a levels in the same subject
PLUS shes not even that pretty JUST a BAG of bones

Aishwarya Rai is extremly beautiful, she is curently known by many as the most beautiful woman in the world. you only have to look at her onscreen or in photographs to see it. i know make up helps but i once heard someone on a television show talk about her saying that she looks even more beautiful without make up, how many women can pull that one off? i really enjoyed her latest movie The Mistress Of Spices, i think she portrayed incredible acting skills along with the other stars. she has the ability to light up the screen, overall i think the movie is one of the best i've seen in years. well done to Paul Berges and Gurinda and especially Ash!

reply

lorna-eve - your having a laugh. I'm a Ash fan but this has to go down as one of her worst movies to date. The movie was awful and really amateur. The narration was annoying and Ash's acting was poor too. All the reviews I have read have slated MOS giving it a 1 or 2 out of 5. Paul Berges and Gurinda suck, all they have done is prove doubters right about Ash's inability to act. No wonder Ash is distanting herself from this movie. This is offically the last movie I am every going to watch from Paul Berges and Gurinda as they really did a dreadful job!

reply

Why did the original poster mention Bend it like Beckham? Aish wasn't in that film. She was in Bride and Prejudie, which had the same director as BILB, Gurinder Chadha. Anticipating the failure of Mistress of Spices simply because there are some incredibly tenuous Indian links is really stupid and narrow-minded.

reply

I agree with you - an ice queen like her (who has lost her natural delicate beauty and unfortunately looks more and more like a witch than a femme fatale) cannot emote because to do so you need to have warmth. I have always found her trying to act coy and even tacky quite often, but the thing you see most is her coldness.

Being a Bengali person, I can tell you that she has no idea how to portray a true Bengali woman from Kolkata. Devdas was just ruined because of her screeching - the only saving grace was Madhuri who with just a smile can do what a hundred years in acting school cannot do for Aishwarya. Contrast this with Vidya Balan in Parineeta, who as a newcomer was mindblowing and got the right effect to a T. The novels were both written by the same person and had similar themes, but look at the difference real actresses like Madhuri or Vidya make to a movie!

Apparently at the end of B&P she did not want Darcy and Lalita to kiss or anything because it was indecent - she refused to do 'those kinds of scenes' - yet anyone who has watched Shabd will know otherwise. Ash just thinks she's so grand that she forgets to stop acting like a superstar and act properly in character in her movies.

And I wish she'd stop pouting all the time - you will not be taken seriously if you keep doing that in art movies (or in every movie). People like Rani Mukherji, Kajol, Nadita Das, Vidya Balan, who might not have the kind of beauty that Ash does (though personally I believe Rani has her own type of beauty) rely on their acting and not looks and still make it through. I wonder if Rani can top her own performance in Black.

But the two best actresses in India till date are Madhuri and Madhubala - both in terms of beauty and acting talent! They are just mindblowing! I think Priyanka Chopra still has some way to go but she'll get there - the lady's beautiful and can act, without showing off all the time.

Bollywood still has hope - and last but not least Queen Kajol is back again!!!

this movie was RUBBISHHHHHHHHHHHH..96 mins of TORTURE! and aish cant act to save her life.. everytime she speaks i dont feel shes acting but just reading off a paper!!

It's in the movies in my city but I wont even bother - Ash trying to be a cross-culture wannabe is too much for me to handle. Will Gurinder stop trying to find the perfect Hollywood actor who can lift off Ash's reputation and career in Hollywood? First Martin Hendersen and then Dylan, what next?!

Unfortunately, she is becoming a stereotypical from-Bollywood-to-Hollywood wannabe. So it might make it difficult for real good Indian actresses to do good work in Hollywood because they might have trouble getting rid of this stereotype in the minds of western audiences. Too bad she had to be the Bollywood 'ambassador' to Hollywood trying to (unsucessfully of course!) represent the Indian acting community while there are loads of real actresses in India. Hollywood might take a few steps back and not encourage Indian talent as much anymore, which is just too bad, because in Ash they haven't even seen (and will never see) a molecule on the tip of the iceberg in terms of what talent Bollywood really has.

And I pity Michael Douglas and Meryl Streep - they would probably suffer during their movie-making catastrophe with Ash!

When I saw Ash in Kandukondein Kandukonein, it was a revelation to me. Up to that point, I agreed with the initiator of this thread. Since then, I always say "It's up to the director. The best director can drive Ash to new heights. God help her if she gets a debut director who is dependent on the actors." Well, Paul Berges has no real experience as a director. He was an assistant with Gurinder Chadha, but that didn't require him to have knowledge of acting. So if the acting is poor in this movie (not released where I live), blame it on the director. Ash movies will go up and down depending on the talent of the diretor. Mani Ratnam and Rituparno Ghosh can get good performances from Ash. But second-tier directors suffer from their own directorial incompetence. Personally my own view of the inadequacies of Bride and Prejudice was focused on Martin Henderson. He was a BAD choice for the role. But I guess he was what Gurinder could get. Too bad. I think there are other actors in the same age range who really could have made that role into something.

PS: Another debutante director who directed Ash was the guy who did Kyun Ho Gaya Na. And the movie was very poor. In that case, you had two actors, Ash and Vivek, trying to help a director, rather than vice versa.

It's true, she is one of the worst that Bollywood could have exported. I know - I'm an English girl whose Mum went mad on Bollywood during her childhood. It's been a difficult heritage to cope with - my sister is still hooked on it and at one point we had more Bollywood Soundtrack CD's and film DVDs than Hollywood.
Madhuri is the best I've seen of the Indian actresses and much of that is screen presence and charisma. 'Aish' is cold - her voice, manner and screen persona lack sincerity. My sister will probably watch the movie (Dylan is sooooo dreamy) but I'll rely on her verdict before being tempted to go see it. I still haven't recovered from the Jane Austen massacre which was Bride and Prejudice. I've rarely cringed so much during one film showing at the cinema before! 'Goodness Gracious Me' made fun of the possibility of mixing Bollywood and Austen but I think that sketch was a more successful cross-over than the hash I had to watch.
Chadha, leave Bollywood and it's pure visual escapist entertainment alone and stop trying to force people to accept it by crossing over. Most either love it or hate it. And if you must insist upon doing it, choose better actors! I think Bend it Like Beckham is as good as it gets for this team.

Totally agree with myself

she cannot act, her rule in hollywood is like an a beautiful indian prostitude, who don't have anything except.............

Hi ya all! This message board simply cracked me up! Where is that MoviesLord?I simply laughed my A ss off! Golly.

Well Ash is a beautiful woman or rather soon to be a diminishing one thanks to her healthy relationships. However for the life of me the woman cannot act.God how does she get those contracts. She has no oomph, no charisma and absolutely no charm in her and yet .....there she is...with the top of the tops....but u gotta hand it to the woman she can dance and look picture perfect if that is any consolation.

Bollywood may not be in league with the big shots like Hollywood....yet... but i like to give the devil his due.....Bollywood is cheeky and blatantly so. So they copy......but then so does Hollywood....'Ring', 'Grudge'...'Matrix'..anyone? Bollywood copies and churns out 10 times more movies than Hollywood (phew!)in a year and most of them take the micky out of the Indian and Asian population's intelligence......its like we are clinically dumb yet having said that bollywood is cool......chav, exciting, larger than life and downright shameless. And they are proud of it. They are developing........their style, the acting (no more tears for hours and hours), the storylines.......but lets not get ahead of ourselves and start ranting and raving about how superb they are and applaud them for their finesse in filmmaking cause lets face it that will take another 10 20 years maybe? I like their bold stride into the modern world....how they are injecting bollywood charm into NRIS and other Asians around the world whether we want it or not. Their ruthless efforts in promoting the assumed Indian/Western culture is definitely worth appreciating if not for class and taste atleast for the effort.

I Loved Bend it like wateva....and Dil Chahta hein.(My fav).......and Devdas for the sets (Not for the over dramatic Aish nor the ridiculously drunk Shah Rukh)And how funny was Salaam Namaste? It was entertaining and didnt set out to teach anyone moralistic cultural values but simple human relationship conflict.
Movies are movies......stories taken or imagined from real life and then given a life and twist of their own. Its an art and like any other artistic painting or sculpture lets appreciate the good and bad regardless of the cultural boundaries. Support wateva u like as long as u like something if not thats ok too.

Ash....girlfriend u need a tutor to teach u to loosen up those haughty facial expressions and most importantly ......stop making silly movies.

WOW! man this is a "hot" topic...(pun intended)...yeah i guess aish is beautiful (beauty is all in the eyes of the beholder)and i guess she can't act but hey..she's got a certain amount of appeal..wherever it may come from...for whatever reason it's there...and producers, directors bank on that appeal...everyone's hoping for a slice of fame and waiting for their big break...you either make the cut or are cut...i guess aish has a lot of publicity (good or bad it doesnt matter, right?) so love her, hate her, be indifferent...she's either gonna be in this busness for the long run or not...the show must go on...but one thing is for sure..she didnt get in on talent...

reply

she didnt get in on talent...

Same goes for about 99% of the industry.

All about looks and connections. very very few get in on talent.
