Please release a version without the animation.

I love Philip K. Dick, I also happen to really enjoy this book, however the film is unwatchable.
A version without the animation would be great, as far as the suits go it can be handled composting, the animation was not needed for such a effect.

No its not meant to be a normal film. I suppose next you will be saying please release a color version of Schindlers List.

reply

Not a bad idea. I thought the use of black and white was gimmicky and really just a vehicle for the red dress scene later on.

reply

the black and white was meant to portray realism of the time. There was no color in those days

reply

Scanner was great, I thought the rotoscoping was perfect. If a studio would have backed it and given it some publicity, it could have made money. I guess it's not the type of film that the dumbest of the dumb want to see, therefore no one heard about the film.

reply

Really? I put off watching this movie for a long time, finally watched it last week, I thought the animation was amazing, it really added something. You end up losing yourself in the animation and it begins to feel like a haze, it's great, really fits with the themes of the movie

reply

I love the animation. I think the movie would still work if it were shot like everything else, but I find the look really draws me in and it fits the theme perfectly. And the way my mind used to work, reality would sometimes look that way to me.

reply

animation was great.

however, if the OP could get cracking on sorting out the release of these other versions, i'd appreciate it and will watch the alternates.

so, hop to it, champ!

No way! The animation is part of what makes this film so unique and fun to watch. You can't take that away, this film is defined by its animation, it's usually the first thing discussed when this movie comes up in conversation.

reply

I thought the animation was a nice touch, something new, I didn't think it necessarily added to the movie but gave it a certain sense of 'novelty' of sorts. Quite liked it.

reply

I think you misunderstand the whole point of the rotoscope. The book is even kind of written like that. In the scene where the waitress is stripping in Freck's mind, the book talks about a "thought bubble" (I kid you not) over his head. The truth is the rotoscope is how Arctor's and the other character's world is shifted into the surreal by the effects of substance D. If they ever did a sequel I guarantee it would not be rotoscoped and I doubt even the scramble suits would be in it. The whole world is a projection of Arctor's delusional haze.

reply

But the animation could have been better. The rotoscope was annoying, like when you see it turning around and you can see the perspective getting closer it sort of wobbles due to bad animation.

reply

That perspective changing thing, where certain objects dont really follow the camera moving, was intended. No movie/animation type/special effect matches the feel of psychedelics closer than rotoscoping. If you had experience with those kinds of drugs, maybe you'd appreciate it more? I thought it was the best part of that kind of animation.

reply

I'd watch a version that was not animated. I watched the beginning on-line. It was some sort of free preview of the first part of the movie to get you to rent the movie. Ironically, if I had not seen the free preview, I would have rented it. Like you, I found it unwatchable.

Please release an unrenderized version of Shrek!
