I need to defend this movie

Having watched the original My Sassy Girl I am disappointed with all the haters out there. Give this one a chance.

Sure it's a remake, but it was still great and captures the same emotions from the first movie and more - sure the ending is given the Hollywood treatment but it works.

Elisha Cuthbert was fantastic, and the male lead whose name I still don't know played the original role of the "fool" faithfully, although his Korean counterpart wins the bumbling stakes for sure.

Cut from the same cloth, but uniquely different - My Sassy Girl (2008) is a solid movie.

Watch it before you listen to these whiners on the forums.

I just watched it and I've got to say that I really liked it!!! I thought it was gonna be terrible based on some of the comments I heard here, but I thought it was great.

I still think I like the Korean version better, just because of its sentimental value (I saw it for the first time in Korea). But something about this one, having American lead characters and being set in New York through an American cultural filter, I think it hit a little closer to home. I really find myself identifying with Charlie too. He just reminds me so much of myself! :)

What?

I just watched a remake?

Wow, gotta see the original then... I loved this one's humor so much!

EDIT: Ah **ddam *rap, I just noticed I'm at the wrong board. This is some godawful yank remake, I DID watch the original.
This one here must be awful like all the remakes of good asian cinema.
Bah, I could puke when I see how they ruin everything by "remaking". Argh...

Wow, you guys really hate it that much? It just wasn't that bad of a movie!

reply

I honestly dont get the hate either. At the very least it is an enjoyable romantic comedy with interesting characters. It's a cute film with heart. Stop comparing the darn thing to another movie. After all, it's not like the remake of King Kong from the 70's. The acting in that was truly abhorrent.

reply

This isn't a good movie, it's an ok movie.
The original is a good movie.

I have watched the original "My Sassy Girl" and was disappointed by the remake. BEFORE you flip out, just hear me out.

The remake was actually a decent movie. The movie is fresh compared to typical Hollywood movies where the characters engage in physical intimacy of sorts to demonstrate to the audience that sparks are flying. Boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, inter-relationship happenings, boy still ends up with girl, and they live happily ever after....typical love story that takes a complete idiot to mess up.

My problem with the movie was that it tried too hard to be like the original. I think the American version would have been much nicer and flowed better if they gave it more breathing room. Some of the comedy in the original version doesn't translate well into English, yet it seems like the writers tried to force these comedic lines into English without giving the context as to how they had any relevance to the story. For example, Charlie tells the blind date guy that he should be prepared to go to jail--it's a good warning, but unless I missed something, he never actually went to jail because of Jordan. At least in the Korean version, the guy actually did some time (even if it was one night and he got punched by the girl afterwards for his stupidity). They even took the "building a bridge for the one you love" directly from the Korean version, without the quirky scenes in between that led to this statement.

Although the American version does have a flair of its own in some respects, it is still a copy-cat version of the original. Even if I hadn't seen the original, this film would have left me with an empty feeling. The film didn't give enough time for the relationship between Jordan and Charlie to develop and it was really annoying when the best friend was telling Charlie to ditch the girl because they weren't kissing or doing the naughty. The film would have done better if it was only loosely based on the original but was still its own movie. The movie might have succeeded if it had better writers, more time to develop (the Korean film was at least twice as long), and a better production company in general.

The problems with this version are numerous. It tries too hard to be funny, has too much Hollywood plug and play going on, and I'm sorry but the casting was bad.

The original had a lot more charm to it. This movie was crass and obvious.

To be fair though, I will try to watch it again on its own merits.

The trailer makes it look like a parody of the original. There's no chemistry at all. Why would anyone even want to watch this?

Its simply a beautiful movie. And Ms. Cuthbert, my God, I fell a little in love with her

reply

I just now give it a chance to watch until the end, seeing how i like Elisa Cuthbert in 24 & Girl Next Door, she is beautiful here too but i don't know it is because the script that says so or her acting, but she is look like missing something. the way she act drunk or angry is seem not fiery enough. like she need more oomphhh. or in simple word she is just not sassy enough.

i know they tried to make it works in america culture but many of the script changes really miss that make the original special,

i don't know maybe because i watched the original so i definitely compared it, but i didn't say this is a bad movie, just an okay movie, not special like the original, and by the release straight to video i assume many others are feeling the same like me.

i just want to ask someone lives in the states. Can you bring a passed out girl to a hotel/motel? as i'm trying to understand as the script changes from motel/hotel just like the original to college dorm.
