I need to defend this movie

Having watched the original My Sassy Girl I am disappointed with all the haters out there. Give this one a chance.

Sure it's a remake, but it was still great and captures the same emotions from the first movie and more - sure the ending is given the Hollywood treatment but it works.

Elisha Cuthbert was fantastic, and the male lead whose name I still don't know played the original role of the "fool" faithfully, although his Korean counterpart wins the bumbling stakes for sure.

Cut from the same cloth, but uniquely different - My Sassy Girl (2008) is a solid movie.

Watch it before you listen to these whiners on the forums.

Initially I didn't want to watch this remake after seeing the original either, but thought I would give it a shot and try it out.

After watching it, this is the best analogy I can come up with: the original is like a nice, cold, refreshing bottle of pepsi (or coke or whatever carbonated beverage you prefer) just opened with all its fizziness...the remake, however, is just *flat* pepsi. All the fizziness is gone!! It was just...okay. Not terrible, but it lacks a lot of the ...sassiness... that the original had. All the spunk was taken out of it. I like how they tried to stick close to the original storyline but somehow I left the movie feeling like something was missing...

Just my opinion!

Watched it with an open mind, even though the original is pretty much one of my fave movies ever.I'll semi-review it and please note that it isn't saying one is better or whatnot, rather my honest opinion.

Liked it but it didn't have the similar feel as the original. Both characters were somewhat reduced in characterization. The goofiness/uselessness of the guy in the majority of the original(until the last part where he builds himself up to be better for her) isn't used to show his growth. On the other side, Jordan isn't as vicious as the original female character, she's borderline sweet even. Those aspects of the original are what drew me in to the film and it lacked in this one. Like I said, these aspects were important for character growth I felt.

I understand why it was done though, to fit into the whole stereotypical American movie scene of your typical romantic comedy. Also the final kiss scene was the only other point where I felt if the original hand holding under the table scene would have worked better. The kiss was just another typical American remake necessity I guess. So yeah, my only 2 comparisons with the original where it loses out is the final scene and the depth of character.

Nonetheless, An enjoyable film, having watched both the works of Jesse Bradford and Elisha Cuthbert before. I thought that with the way they were written, they did the characters justice.

I give it a 7.5 out of 10. If you wanna refer, I gave the original a 9/10.

BIG ISSUE WITH THE SCRIPT... and story.....

I am a fan of the Korean version, I just watched this version, it's actually not that bad if you don't compare it with the original. But fans are going to find that difficult when the original is fantastic.

I haven't seen the original MSG but i liked the remake.

The reason why the original is so much funnier and better is because of the context. Korean society is much different from American society. And the role reversal couldn't be as funny as it could be from the original.

To take it one step further, some of the funniest scenes from the original can only be understood by those with an understanding of Korean culture and traditions.

For example, in the scene from the original where Cha Tae Hyun's character meets the girl's parents for the first time, he is offered an alcoholic drink from her father and turns away from him only to find himself face to face with her mother. In Korean culture, it is a sign of disrespect to face your elder when drinking alcohol.

My biggest gripe with the remake was that it seemed as if Hollywood simply took the original, translated it into English, and de-Koreanized the script without making up for these missing interactions that were so crucial in developing the characters in the original.

Having said that, I didn't find the remake as bad as a lot of other people did. No, it wasn't as good as the original, but how many remakes really are? Having enjoyed the Korean version so much, I was intrigued to watch Yann Samuell's version and I found it thoroughly enjoyable. Of course, having Elisha Cuthbert as the female lead didn't hurt either! :)

I don't understand, I think I'm watched a completely different movie than everyone else is. I do not understand the hype that the original gets. Everything about that movie was so forced and surreal in a very boring way. When the couple sneak into the amusement park and get kidnapped by a soldier I just wanted to laugh, but it wasn't funny.

Thank you, I can't believe this movie has such a low rating here on imdb. I saw the original two, maybe three years ago, and when I saw this on my brother's external hdd, I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was an American remake.

Both movies are great in their own right. I didn't think for an instant that this didn't do the original justice. Elisha and Jesse were perfect for their roles. 9/10

I watched this movie for elisha and i really loved it. Better than I expected. I mean this movive was much better then most other romantic comedies out there and this one wasn't even a comedy, it was just a love story with some twists. Elisha and Jesse were great choices as well. They also did a good job. Very good movie overall.

The remake is an ok movie, not terrible, but certainly not ground breaking either. The problem with it, was that it was an ironed out version of the original. It didn't make me laugh as much, and it didn't make me anywhere as sad as the original.

It's been a long time since I've seen the original, and I've read the translated posts of the original blog/story recently (which is great), so I can't really remember if the original movie was as good as I remember, but as I wrote, the original had a certain something about it, and I remember laughing and feeling sad way more than I did watching the remake.

This was just another sweet hollywood movie, missing the rough edges that made the first movie fantastic.

After watching both the original and the remake, in my opinion, they are each good in their own ways. The original was very good at making the girl look a little more "insane" or "sassy" then the remake. This made for a funnier movie and a little lighter tone throughout most of it.

However, I think Elisha did a better job at conveying the sadder side, or the hurt side of the girl. Even in the "happy" moments of the movie, it seemed Elisha always had a little sadness stowed away in there that gave me the sense that something more was wrong then she was letting on. In the original I did not really get this sense from the girl and had it not been for the guy's commentary I probably would not have caught on at all. While the guy in the movie could see this side of the girl, I could not, which I thought was a problem.

I thought both guys were equally good, especially fitting into the movie they were in. The Korean guy was good at being a little more goofy and adding to the overall tone of the original, while the American was more sentimental feeling and seemed to fit the sadder toned American version better.

All in all I think both are really good in their own right. The original was a much better complete story and flowed well; whereas the remake was a little more ambiguous which made it not feel as much like a complete story. Honestly, I think the romance part of the story was actually done significantly better in the remake (*SPOILERS* minus the ending with the kiss instead of the hand holding). I think the ambiguousness of the remake added to the charm of the romance rather then having every detail thrown in your lap and thoroughly explained.

Ratings:
Original 9/10
Remake 8/10
