I need to defend this movie

Having watched the original My Sassy Girl I am disappointed with all the haters out there. Give this one a chance.

Sure it's a remake, but it was still great and captures the same emotions from the first movie and more - sure the ending is given the Hollywood treatment but it works.

Elisha Cuthbert was fantastic, and the male lead whose name I still don't know played the original role of the "fool" faithfully, although his Korean counterpart wins the bumbling stakes for sure.

Cut from the same cloth, but uniquely different - My Sassy Girl (2008) is a solid movie.

Watch it before you listen to these whiners on the forums.

-Monte

Thank you for injecting some logic into the board. It's nice to see someone who isn't just flailing wildly with rage at the very idea of a remake.

I have just finished watching this movie and it really isnt that bad even compared to the Korean one. Elisha Cuthbert plays the girl really well.

I have to admit that at first, I hated the thought of a remake. "They're going to kill the movie!" I told myself. But having watched both, I definitely agree with Monte. Give this one a chance. Or, go into it not thinking that it's a remake, but just a romantic comedy and try to enjoy it. I love the original - it's still my favorite movie - but this one wasn't half bad. It's a bit different and has its own charm. They aren't the same movie/actors; it's going to be a different movie. Take it as such. :o)

Finally a reasonable opinion. I thought Travesty and I were the only ones here who actually looked at this movie objectively.
Thank you, Monte.

The original "my sassy girl" is my favorite romantic comedy, and when i heard about this remake i was like WTFFF whyyy, but i watched it a week ago and i have to say..it was surprisingly good! Most people hate it because its a "remake" without even watching it.

I know its hard to watch with the original NOT in mind but try and u'll find that it's pretty good. Elisha did a great job and Jesse was pretty good as well.

reply

I didn't Elisha Cuthbert did a good job on this one. She's just not sassy enough. But she sure is easy on the eyes though.

I did like the direction though.

reply

yeah her performance was pretty good, the only thing missing there is she aint that sassy enough!

I really really truly loved this, the story was great. And I think both Elisha and Jesse did a great job
Now, I have to say, I'm curious about the original movie & if I find it I'll make sure to watch it. :]

Same here, I haven't seen the original, so I saw this movie with an open mind and I really enjoyed it. I liked the 2 main characters, I actually cared for them. I'll try to watch the original soon!

One thing to remember people.

Those people who will automatically deem this movie as crap by pure comparison to the original, well are too biased to be objective.

Then again, the issue with a this movie that it's a remake of national sensation that simultaneously impacted the pop-culture on a whole new level, as-well as pushing the entire movie industry forward to new levels of quality never seen from that country. Now, we here in N.America might not think this is a big-deal since Hollywood has been dominating the silver screen for like 100 years now, but it needs to be taken into serious consideration. You don't have to be Korean, or understand Korean to acknowledge that aspect, just the basic background of cinematic history. For me, My Sassy Girl was one of the first few South-Korean movies that I've seen; among 3 other romance/dramas movies, including Siworae (the original Lake-House), Love So Divine and Shall We Kiss, and My Sassy Girl soared about a hundred miles above all of them. I actually knew very little of that movie or the actors. I had no Idea it was that big In Korea (I found out about it later), I had no Idea that the cast was top-notch, they were nobodies to me at that time (again, found out about them later.) And I will tell you this much, I've seen A-LOT of Hollywood movies, and A-LOT of Romance/Drama/Comedies, including teen flicks. And none had ever evoked the emotions that original My-Sassy Girl evoked. It was like discovering that you could use a whole new set of muscles you never knew you had. And believe me, to say that this is note-worthy would be an understatement.

So with regards to the New-My Sassy Girl remake; I don't have beef with it being fairly decent flick as a standalone movie. However the fact that it is a remake just comes into consideration automatically, if you're aware of it. However, even if you don't, can anyone honestly say that this is the best romance comedy from Hollywood. Does it completely redefine the genre, or does it stand above all the previous romantic comedies made, or will it get tossed into the SuperStore bargain bin in 6 months? I know this movie had budget release issues, but if it was that good, it should have aired in theaters and not a straight to video.

My beef is that from all of the remakes Hollywood chooses to pursue, this one should have had a whole lot more work, thought and heart poured into...

It's a shame.

I agree that it evokes different feelings and exercises "a whole new set of muscles", but that's just it. It's a foreign film that's different in a way. We don't really have sogaetings (hope that's right) so it's something different. I must say though that there are some Hollywood movies that are on par as a romantic comedy.

If you are looking to break into watching foreign films this movie is a must.

Are you kidding me?! This movie isn't even sad. Not even funny.
