Michael's hate for Toby

I'm re-watching the series on the Netflix after I stopped somewhere around season 6 I think? Decided to start from the beginning rather than where I left off during it's original run and I love this show and characters and it's still so good a second time around.

Anyway, it kinda bothers me how much Michael openly hates Toby. I mean I know Michael can be such a jerk, and Toby can be somewhat of a doormat but I don't understand why he would hate him so much other than him being perceived as an enemy working in HR. But Toby's been nothing but nice to him and Michael treats him like garbage. I just finished watching the one where he and Dwight try to frame him to get him fired and that was taking things too far for me. But why would Toby even want to come back at all? I wouldn't want to work in a place where my boss bullied me like that, and I wouldn't let them get away with it either. He's in HR, surely Michael's treatment of him is worthy of an investigation that could get Michael fired if Toby wanted to.

That's really the only thing about this show that bothers me, otherwise I like all the characters, warts and all. Sometimes I think I really like Michael, because despite being a jerk he's often a little naïve about it and there's a sincerity to him that makes me sympathize sometimes. And Toby, I think he's a really sweet guy for the most part (his unrequited crush on Pam got a little creepy at times though) but sometimes I just want to reach into my laptop, give him a good shake and yell, "Get a backbone and stand up for yourself!"

"You think you've got problems? I've got a mullet!" Stan Pines "Gravity Falls"

It's not just Michael who hated him, there are moments where other office members are annoyed with him. When he comes to Jim to say that Michael threw him a lame birthday party, Jim says something along the lines of "Toby's great, but sometimes he can be a bit much." Also as stated above, Andy understood why Michael hated Toby and told Toby so.

Toby was written to be lame and an easy character to dislike. He didn't fit with the rest of the characters at all.

Agree. But all Toby had to do was grow a pair and get aggressive back once or twice. Michael, Jim, Andy...all scared to death of confident, assertive people.

Get on the scale son! Get off the scale.

I loved when he was showing Pam how to throw a punch when she was planning on hitting Michael lmao

Everyone on the show should have bullied that cross-eyed nerd, Toby. Physical bullying even better!

It’s not just Michael that hates Toby, when Jim becomes manager he get irritated with him. Also, it’s just a running joke to hate HR at Dunder Mifflin if you’re in management. David Wallace makes a comment to Jim when he’s interviewing for the corporate position about “you’ll love everyone, except we got this one guy in HR”

Toby is a tragic character that we see in almost every work environment. An introverted and reserved person, he avoids confrontation at any cost and, therefore, becomes an easy target for bullies like Michael, Jim, and Ryan (not surprisingly, it's three of them). His introverted personality and repressed emotions may naturally lead to an explosion at some point. A person who does not defend himself loses the respect of his colleagues. I think one of the reasons why Michael hates him is Toby's lack of reaction to Michael's abuse.

About Michael he hate anyone outside of the office, including, the I.T Guy. Anyone who could ruin his fun. I am not sure what is the deep reason for this behavior.

THE OFFICE IS HIS HOME AND HIS EMPLOYEES HIS FAMILY...EVERYONE ELSE IS A THREAT TO THE "PERFECT LIFE" HE HAS AT THE OFFICE.

Michael has a desperate need for people to love him, and the office, at least for a long time, was the only place where he found some kind of success and happiness. As you said, he is afraid that his 'perfect life' with his co-workers will crumble if someone outside of the office ruins the fun. On a certain level, he is a bit like Toby, avoiding confrontations. But in Michael's case, the reason is to prevent inadvertently assuming the role of the tough boss who may get respected by his employees but not became a friend of them.

I haven't watched this show in a few years, but to me, the best seasons were:

1) Season 5: The Michael Scott Paper Company was Fantastic

2) Season 4: Season 4 had a dark tone to it, specifically the episode where Michael & Jan have Jim & Pam over for
dinner and Michael & Jan get into an argument and Michael breaks his Plasma TV and it Was such a big deal with
the Plasma TV, all 12 inches of it from the looks of it..LOL

3) Season 3

4) Season 2: Loved The Halloween episode with Dwight trying to manipulate Michael into firing an employee that
Michael has til 5PM to do

5) Season 1
