Have to confess my disappointment

I bought this film on DVD, expecting to really enjoy it. It had some nice scenes, but in the end I came away disappointed.

My problem was that the fight scenes were too dependent on fly-by-wire and other effects, which often fail to impress me. In Crouching Tiger and Hero the story-line and sumptuous camera work more than made up for this. In general, though, I prefer martial arts films which rely on careful choreography and the skill of the performers.

For kung fu humour, give me Project A or Mr. Vampire any day.

It's an over the top comedy depicting abilities using wirework and CGI, almost a parody of the films you mentioned with their 'sumptuous camera work'. It's an entertaining and funny film and never ever pretended to be a martial arts picture grounded in reality.

Sayonara, not to be confused with cyanide, which is, of course, goodbye in any language.

reply

i get it's not meant to a serious action kung fu movie to the level of those like Crouching Tiger, etc. but i've got to say i didn't find it hilarious either, some parts were comical but they only made me smile at best.

reply

The thing is, Jackie Chan's films manage to be both parodies of Kung-Fu movies, and very good Kung-Fu movies in their own right.

this is one of the few movies, like Hero that get me a little teary-eyed.

reply

yea, me too. i thought the last part, not necessarily the actual ending, but the second half of the movie was better than the first and very emotional

reply

Jackie Chan's films aren't parodies, they are just action comedies. This on the other hand, was a parody.

reply

Don't mistake a comic kung fu film for a parody kung fu film. 1 is not necessarily the other.

reply

You didn't find it funny because you didn't get any of the references. It references many films, and is a parody of wire fu films. If you're inept in both experiences, you won't get it.

reply

I have to say I sort of disagree there. Im no martial arts film buff, but the entire ending was like some sort of spiritual awakening or something, and had little humor. I mention this simply to sort of point out your observation that it didnt "pretend to be a martial arts" film seems a little off.

I too was fairly disappointed with this movie. I guess people's sense of humor just varies greatly

reply

The thing is that Stephen Chow has a total different sense of humour. I totally dig Jackie Chan's movies both for their humour and fighting parts BUT it's very refreshing to see Kung Fu Hustle or Shaolin Soccer's humour. He does many things Chan would never do, for example Kung Fu has some very violent and brutal moments. And I've yet to se a movie where Chan plays character with lots of "bad" attitudes ... Stephen Chow otoh always plays a guy with massive flaws. He was a total loser, low-life criminal and mean to about everybody, including his sidekick and the lollypop girl. And while the humour and action scenes in Chan movies are great, he almost never has stylish/artsy scenes like the opening axe-gang-dance or the cat killing scene with nothing but shadows.

I found it difficult at first to have such a strange mixture of elements and styles but once I set my mood accordingly, I enjoyed it very much! I like to be surprised and Chow's movies are perfect for this.

reply

probably because you don't know much about the choreography in the old martial arts movies(do forgive me if i was wrong). most moves refer to something memorable: fictional characters and films.

i still don't get why jackey chan is so popular. yes his moves are very solid but knowing now he got a women pregnant, dump her by saying he 'just commit a mistake that every man on earth would', bad month the woman, as well as his 'own daughter' every chance he got.

he is a disgrace of chinese males. i have no respect to him. in contrary, Chow yun fat, jet li are great guys deserve all the respect.

sorry, been a bit OT

Old man is scary when they're obsessed with young actress age of his grand-daughter. Run! Emma RUN!

I wasn't referring to martial arts styles, I was referring in styles how to shoot movies.

Jacky Chan is mostly popular for his movies of course. I don't care much what actors do in their private life. We don't really get to know their private life anyway (if they have one in the first place). His comment 'just commit a mistake that every man on earth would' sounds rude but you have to admit that it contains a lot of truth. Maybe the "would" should have been "has also done" (and I bet the true meaning got lost in translation). We do not know the circumstances. Once I met a girl and she was very hasty and wanted to sleep with me on our second date. And she wanted to do i without a condom. She swore she took the pill and she even had her negative HIV-test ready to convince me. 3 dates and 2 weeks later she disappeared out of my life with dubious claims. It's possible that I am father without knowing it, it's possible that all she wanted was a baby (there are some more hints that support this theory). I am just lucky that she doesn't knock at MY door and demands marriage or money or both. *beep* like this happens all over the world millions of times. The difference is that I am not famous. If I was, she surely came back to with claims and the press would be interested in that case. And since I don't want to discuss private things like these in the public I would most likely say something similar like Mr Chan did.

reply

Loving how this discussion has turned from the movie to Jackie Chan's illegitimate child

reply

When you put it that way... it's *beep* hilarious =))))))

reply

Agreed. I enjoyed this movie on a certain level, but there's little going on in the way of kung fu... that finale had about as much actual martial arts fighting as a flying scene in a Superman flick. Chow did a couple of roundhouse kicks and the rest was an attempt to outdo The Matrix.

A shame, a lot of the movie is really enjoyable, especially as a comedy.

reply

Agreed, a few laughs, some nice fight scenes, but ultimately disappointing.

I am not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.

reply

There is always afew of you people. Thank for the info, now move along.

reply

"you people" ?

As in "people with an opinion different from your own" ?

I imagine so. We have evolution to thank for that.

I am not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.

reply

"you people" would include that guy on the forum for "The Godfather" saying "OMG, this is the world movie evar!", it would include the guy on "Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail" saying "This movie sucked, I did not laugh once", and yes it includes you because you put yourself into that catagory of people who seek out popular movies with largely positive reviews just so you can attack and flame the movie and attempt to discredit in an attempt to feel unique and somehow enlightened (or shall we say evolved and let you keep stroking that ego of yours with your own words?) over the majority.

Excuse me now, your post has shattered my ego abit so I am now going to go to the "Citizen Kane" message board and tell everyone I think that movie is crap, it is boring, the acting sucks, and I seem to be the only guy in the world smart enough to realize it.

reply

I cannot believe anyone would compare this tripe to The Godfather or The Quest for the Holy Grail.

Seriously.

EDIT : ok, tripe is too strong a word, but it's mediocre at best.

I am not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.

reply

So you are one of those guys then, lols.

reply

People who go to TGF films and say they hated it and also hate gangster films or will go to a Boy's Town board and say they hate both religion and b/w films. You don't see me going to the fast and the furious boards just to say that I hate these types of mindless muscle films bec they were never my cup of tea. I just don't bother because it was never my preferred genre to begin with.

reply

Well for you to say you were disappointed because it didn't feel like a real martial arts film is like saying the movie Airplane! didn't take itself seriously to be a real disaster film. You fail to note that this is a spoof as much as Airplane was to the disaster films of that era and even though the latter was a spoof it still had a narrative with everything else added in between which is much like Kung Fu Hustle.

Although I applaud you for coming here to say what you don't like about the movie but at the end of the day everyone to their own taste and as you said yourself that you "prefer martial arts films which rely on careful choreography and the skill of the performers" which Chow never intended it to be as he said in interviews. I watched it and I thought it was hilarious, not because I'm a pop corn munching movie goer with an IQ of a bat but because I appreciated it for its slap stick fight scenes and not taking itself seriously while films such as Crouching or Hero with the imaginative fight scenes that are humanely impossible disappoint me for the wired-fights and for trying to be serious when everything outside the narrative says otherwise.

This comment from grey_outlaw is the one that really works for me. I totally agree with his comparison of Kung Fu Hustle to Airplane! rather than to something like Crouching Tiger.

C'mon, guys. Kung Fu Hustle is not a Kung Fu film. It's also not a deep message film. I don't know about you, but I thought it was hilarious, and I rarely use that word because hilarity is not generally what I look for in a film. But I tell you, I've seen this film two and a half times (missed the beginning once), and each time I see it, I sit there practically holding my breath for that next moment that I know is coming. And when it comes, I love it as much as I did the first time I saw it!

I find it to be extremely satisfying in its over-the-top characterizations and its absurd take on the Kung Fu movie genre. Really a great fun movie.

Couldn't agree with you more grey_outlaw.

Your disappointment isn't other people's disappointment...just yours. So don't watch the movie anymore if it bothers you. Ya' Dope!

Man i agree, ive been watching Stephen chow movies since i was a little kid - and seen most of em. This one was pretty weak compare to some of his other gem. Felt the movie started strong, but lack a good ending. Have no idea how this is rated higher than Shaoling Soccer, which i thought was far superior.
