To my knowledge, "Centre" is British English and "Center" is American English.

Reading the ignorant comments on this board makes me shiver. How ignorant can you be if you don't even know your own language?!?...

It's a Hellènic word, not Latin or English, so center is wrong; it's not comparative or agentive. -tr- is the instrumental case of centron. The English word would be ecklen or edglen.

And it's speakt centre—cappa epsilon ný taý hro epsilon—or centrè by dialect—end in èta, not sèntr.

Since Jules Verne wrote it in French it is indeed CENTRE. But of course these version was done by Americans, it is translated to Center.

"Spelt?"
"How about "spelled?"
Complaining about terrible grammar, and then using equally poor grammar to do so, is almost ironic.
Almost.

Bad films are a crime against humanity.

A common misperception is that if it isn't in the dictionary, it isn't a word. That's wrong. No dictionary lists all words. There have been educated guesses as to how many actual words there are in the English language. Some go as high as 8 million. It all depends on how you define the word "word."

"Spelt" is an American word. It is found in all American dictionaries beyond pocket editions. It was the proper way to spell "spelled" back when people spelled "spelled" "spelt."

"Spelt" is still a proper spelling. It just isn't the most common spelling.

My job is transcription of the spoken word. I use American dictionaries. If I did the same job in London, I would use British dictionaries.

Personally, I think it would be nice if we would all go back to using Sanskrit.

Some words are spelt differently in the UK and the US. I'm only writing this to try and get to 50 pages.

After reading to about page 10 I had to just stop. The anger so many of you cause (whether indirectly by trolling or directly with your hate and words) is too much.

Is the entire world racist? Seriously. Enough about the spelling (which is extremely elementary), but how many of you IMDB members post blatantly generalized statements that come off as racist about "Americans being stupid and arrogant" is simply a joke.

I feel comfortable saying that 3/4 of Americans know that center was originally spelled "centre", until American English came along. I think most learned that in middle school (ages 12-14 for us "Americans"). As well as the basics of our English language here in the states, one that differs from the UK "original English". I mean Canada is right above us and seems to use the UK English as well.

Anyway, I am just saddened at the amount of either trolls on IMDB as well as the people that are blatantly racist and think they are the smartest person on IMDB (whether they live in America, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia or Austria (haha), China, Korea.

People don't realize the internet is available to many countries in Europe, South America, Asia, Australia, the UK, even South Korea and Malaysian's often have great internet access...... not just us "stupid Americans".

When ONE American does something stupid, like say make a post about "centre being spelled center" (which is obviously coming from a either a teenager or troll, or possibly the minority percentage of illiterate Americans), why does it always result in what seems to always be someone from England/UK talking mad *beep* about "Americans in general" rather than simply direct their statement at that ONE person that made the comment.

We are all smart, we all have deficiencies, worldwide. When people make ignorant, arrogant, or stupid comments, hold them accountable and debate it. Don't become a part of this world-wide racist-esque comebacks and sentiments of American's stupidity and issues.

I speak for myself, but Americans know who Stanley Kubrick is and was (many worship his skill and craft), as we know of all the talent in Hollywood. We realize that Hollywood is a melting pot of the world, from actors to writers to producers to directors. As a whole we do "create the best", simply because Hollywood exists here and the finances do as well. But stating that is simply a fact. Even Danny Boyle has made films in the UK and also Hollywood produced stuff. Think of all the great actors from the UK... the list is endless.

When is the UK/English verse the Americans as a natural enemy ever going to end? It's so often a result of someone from the stupid population making a post (whether from the states or the UK), and then a reply that's almost as bad as being stupid or ignorant in it's use of arrogant, pompous, defensive, sometimes racist comment posted back (whether it's by someone in the US or UK or any part of the world; though I have really observed and sensed a huge amount of angst, anger, envy, hate, between the UK and American's.

Is this what the IMDB forums are made for? Is this why we have the internet? As an American I would hope people are forgiving around the world, whether I mistype a word or make a stupid statement. I'd hope someone kindly corrected me, wherever they are from, and at the same time we all need to think a little more before we finally post stuff online. I see how stupid the OP is on this thread, but I also see the stupidity in some of the replies as well... and I'm not sure who is worse.

It seems like things have become better in real life, but then you go online and the hate, the racism, the empowerment people feel for whatever country they live in, it's all over the world, not just America.

I'm not trying to say America doesn't have an excess of people who are under-educated or simply stupid, but don't hold it against the majority of us Americans who are normal and open to the world.

reply

I mean the OP obviously is a troll.

"It's SPELT CENTRE!"

Spelt is a grain... "spelled" would be the correct word. And obviously Centre and Center are one in the same.....

Don't let one troll create 20 pages of posts full of racist generalizations and arrogant comments... it makes everyone look stupid in one form or another.

reply

In the UK we say 'spelt', so there.
