Why did I rent this movie??-Tim Burton wannabe?? + political rant

I love to read, and I love movies. So, when someone suggests a movie or I hear about it in conversation, or read a reference to it in an article, I jot it down next to the word "Netflix", in order to put it on my list.
As I watched this movie, I wanted to be involved, but I just couldn't. I kept thinking: this is a Jim Henson production, yet it should be sweetness and light. This movie should have been made by the king of surreal; Tim Burton and of course, musical score by Danny Elfman.
I understand that this movie was supposed to be an allegory-love your parents and don't even think of rebelling, but there was no reconciliation at the end, only a brief hug from the dad and a few tears from the daughter.
I'm still trying to figure out who told me to go rent this movie, because I simply didn't enjoy it.
Finally, a political rant. This movie takes place in England in the present day. A woman circus worker faints, is taken to hospital (using correct British English, there) and is presumably given an X-Ray which shows that she has either a tumor or cancer. She is taken into surgery well within a week (not specified in the movie) if not within days.
Now, I'm not from England, but I have friends, acquaintances and customers there and I consider myself better informed than most of my fellow Americans. I'm pretty sure that under England's socialized medicine, you'd be waiting a good long time for surgery, as in months or even years.
I remember sometime in the early 2000s (?) when a high-ranking member of the Canadian Parliament (and close friend of Hillary Clinton) came south of the border to have major surgery done. Why not do it in Canada; after all, your taxes pay for it, no????
