After hearing about the Gossip Girl reboot, I wondered who I would recast if this show was rebooted.
Can't seem to think of anyone who fits this show better than who was in it. The Cohen parents, Ryan, Seth. Julie Cooper Nichol Cooper Roberts Bullitt Atwood. Even Anna and Summer were great.
I mean, I could maybe see someone like Dacre Montgomery pulling off the Ryan role, but would I want that? Probably not.
The problem with that concept is that it has been reappropriated into the reality TV format.
Remember "Laguna Beach" on MTV taking off after this show petered out? Young viewers then and now are more into narcissism than they are into preconceived story and character arcs. I think that's what killed "The O.C." was its own premise about a poor kid from the other side of the tracks finding acceptance amongst the wealthy, attractive class. Once they achieved that in season two the series stumbled because there wasn't anything left to fight for.
I completely agree with both points. I vaguely recall Laguna Beach being popular for a time, but overall I think you're right that narcissism is more interesting to young viewers, hence the rise of teens on tiktok doing the bare minimum but being adored by millions of kids. I also think that a lot of shows these days set up a premise that's quickly resolved and hence lose steam quickly - no one really knows how to drag anything out without it feeling dragged out.
