I can't believe this gets a pass for some of the most overused and unconvincing CGI for a movie of this scale. Absolutely nothing looks real or tangible. Peter Jackson has no restraint when it comes to visual effects. There's even a scene where the characters are walking through the dinosaurs during the stampede scene. How the hell did this get past the editing process? Ridiculous.
shareWell, they put most of their effort into Kong himself with his motion-capture facial expressions being provided by Andy Serkis (which paved the way for the Apes movies) but yes, Jackson was putting tech over storytelling at this point in his career. There was too much of it, and a lot of it seems rushed, like the Brontosaurus stampede which somehow doesn't crush our heroes in their path. You can actually see the simplistic, cartoon look of the models and how the lighting sucks and how they lack a feeling of weight and mass.
Much of the CGI on its own is fine, it's when you have humans in the picture as well and they look ridiculously green screened. Then it looks as fake as those old movies where someone is driving and a fake scenery in the background is used to make it look like the car is moving.

shareI wouldn't say that's entirely true. There have been plenty of posts on this board about the poorness of the green screening during the dinosaur stampede, and deservedly so because it looks dreadful. And then a lot of criticism for the Hobbit trilogy being essentially a cartoon with the overuse of CGI. Even The Lovely Bones which came in between both, I personally felt at the time that it was like a CGI fanatic's wet dream. Jackson looks like he became another George Lucas who got addicted to CGI. A shame considering how his earliest films relied so much on cheap practical effects.
Trust me you are not the only one to pick up on this. Jackson reached his peak with the LOTR movies but I believe they are also what changed him for the worse. He got lazy favouring overblown CGI action over a more controlled style of movie making.
there's a scene when kyle chandler is standing in front of the brontosauri and says "trust me, nobody will think these are fake!" and then it cuts to a closeup of the fakest most cgi-looking video game cartoon dinosaur ever. i thought it was supposed to be funny!
