Most likely mental illness was the cause (not guns or atheism). He attacked his first wife and child in 2012. He was also in a military psych ward but escaped. Discharged after all that.
I ran across a few lefty blogs/articles that deny he was an atheist. However, many classmates/relatives quote him. One even admits Kelley was the first atheist he met. Texas!
He hated christians and choose to attack his targets while he thought they were at church. And he brought over a 100 rounds. Its pretty obvious he fully intended to massacre the church as he loathed christians according to his social media posts.
