*Groan* Not another one...

After the several Jungle Book Movies, the Young Tarzan Movies and then the Anty Bully.. you'd think.. you'd just THINK that the movie undistry would finally make an animation movie with a young girl character. But Nooo... of course not.

He'll in the trailer, the 'Princess' is a woman. They can't even have a young girl character the same age as the main character. Why the hell is the movie industry full of sexist pigs? Some high up in the Disney industry himself changed the 'Chicken Little' Character from a girl to a boy, because in his own words, "Girls can't save the world."
Check it out on the Chicken little DVD if you don't believe me.

Besides a fantasy movie like this would have been great for a girl character rather then a boy.

Sorry, but I think the whole movie industry is either 100% sexist (Think of it. They will use boys but never girls - instead they have to find a sexy supermodel to use as eyecandy instead)or have ties with Nambla. Perhaps Both.

I await yet another movie about some boy lost in the Jungle or in his back yard...

Why cant they make a movie based on Baby Island? Two young girls stranded on an island AND having to take care of a bunch of babies while trying to survive.
If the book had been about two boys instead of two girls, they'd not have only made it into a movie but have had at least 3 remakes of it by now.

MirrorMask, Pan's Labyrinth, Labyrinth.

Some might argue they are all secretly the same movie.

I imagine the Fern part is going to be expanded greatly for the live-action version of Charlotte's Web.

reply

Pan's Labyrinth, anyone??

I think girls can save the world, but for this particular movie, Freddie Highmore is excellent and final. So myeh.

You've clearly never seen any Hayao Miyazaki films.. :) Almost all of the Gibli movies feature young girls and women as the heroines, with the male characters being supporting characters.

(See The Cat Returns, Spirited away, Kiki's Delivery Service, or Howl's Moving Castle, for example).

There is also Kaena...had a female main character.

FFS,man or woman, doesn't matter as long as the movie is good. there is and always will be leading roles acted by both women and men. But in action movies,a man is more likely choice, although in underworld kate beckinsale was a dead on choice.:)

That is because those movies were set with the female leads not being leads in and of themselves. In the case of Resident Evil and Tomb Raider, which were based on video games, they were hyper-sexed, live-action versions of their video-game counterparts, and not meant to be actual heroines (although, I must say, Anjolina Jolie did a much better job than I thought she would). Catwoman, on the other hand, was a watered-down version of the original, with overt sexuality emphasized (phallic weapon, very skimpy outfit, etc.) and characteristics exemplified in the original Catwoman (such as extremely high intellect and subtlety) de-emphasized. Thus, the character becomes one that is not as engaging as the original (if you question that the original Catwoman is engaging, simply take a look at the vast expanse that is the Batman universe, and you will see that she is one of the, if not the most, popular villains in that universe).

Gender and sex, in the end, have nothing to do with it. It is a matter of poor handling of characters in the hands of inept writers and directors.

I would have to agree with previous posters that Miyazaki's films have the best heroines. Howl's Moving Castle hits a double-whammy, since it's main character is not only female, but also, for the majority of the movie, *old*. Mirror Mask is another good choice, since not only is the heroine female, but the main villain as well.

I don`t see why people sarcasticially say stuff like ''Oh it lways has to be the guys who save the world in movies.'' That`s stupid because in nearly every movie the female charecters are smarter then the male charecter and I`m sick of it.
Well,I`m a big fan of movies and hope to make some friends here.
P.S. How much does imdb pro cost?

Oh dont let it bother you! You go to film school and make a movie and do whatever the hell you want. I'm a girl and this does not bother me! In fact it would bother me why you would think that this movie is sexist?! Although I do agree with you on the stupid choices of directors to throw in a barely legal, super-sexy eye-candy super-model babe. But don't let it bother you too much. It's the only way to be happy in this world.

Let's make a few points regarding this, again.

1) MOST Femali hero movie's suck. Charlies Angels, anything Xena, however, there are some that don't. Foxy Brown, Cleopatra Jones...yeah, thats about it.

2) Men are physically stronger than women, and I don't care what you say, when it comes to a tough situation, men handle it better. Women cry, men shoot things.

3) Just to add some serious sexism into the fire, a womans brain is smaller than a mans...it's true.

If you want a quick saver-of-the-world, go for a guy.

But if you want a complex, multi-dimensional savior, go for a girl.

Compare Neo and Beatrix Kiddo. Not much of a comparison in terms of character, huh?

reply

Yeeeeeeah...

You mean the Christ-Like savior that was neo?

I mean, Kill Bill 1&2 together are awesomely better than all the Matrix's, but the original Matrix was pretty sweet.

Why do you think it's better to shoot something than cry? What if you make a horrible mistake and spend the rest of your life regretting it? I would rather cry (which I very seldom do) than try to ease my guilt through drinking, drugs, and engaging in reckless behavior.

actually, according to douglas adams, and the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, dolphins ARE smarter than humans, so I think his point still stands. ;-)

ah, lets solve this. Votre argument est stupide. First off, jungle book was a real book, not just a disney movie. the main charecter was a boy. Tarzan Is a GUY! Boo hoo that the charecter isnt a girl! And your idea for a bunch of girls stranded on a island taking care of babys is stupide! No one in there right mind except a little 5 year old girl would want to see that. Its not the movie industry that is sexist, it is you who is sexist. Im sure feminism went out of style with the seventies stuff. Hippies died, so did the feminist movment. Just becuse they dont want to use a bratty girl for the main charecter doesnt mean there sexist. it means, they are realistic. If a girl were stranded in the jungle, they would cower under a tree and cry, a boy would survive and be able to do thing. Face it, theres a reason things are manly. Becuse they are Very unusal for a girl to do. No on really wants to see little sarah run around the jungle taking care of babys. Why dont you just call it, Lord of the Cabbage Patch, insted of baby island. Becuse thats what it sounds like. Sorry, keep lord of the flys the way it is, and not flood the market with weman only movies. No want wants to see The Visit from the Red man of china, the story of 100 women in one room, all on their period. sorry, but it wont make a good movie just becuse you thought the book was good when you were 7 and still reading the baby sitters club.

Hmmmmm.... Not that an original movie about a female Tarzan-copycat, or a female Mowgli-copycat character wouldn't be a bad idea. Actually, they've already had a sort of female Tarzan type, and she's been around for years and years and has had at least one movie and at least one TV series done about her. Her name is Sheena.

Dunno if there's ever been a female Mowgli copycat, however. Would probably be fun to see, though.

And your idea for a bunch of girls stranded on a island taking care of babys is stupide! No one in there right mind except a little 5 year old girl would want to see that.

Uhhhhhmmmmm.... Actually, there IS a story by that title and description out there. Here it is at Amazon.com:

http://www.amazon.com/Baby-Island-Carol-Ryrie-Brink/dp/0689717512/sr=8-1/qid=1168406427/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-8413357-1720104?ie=UTF8&s=books

Would probably make for a powerful film, too, by the look of it.

Its not the movie industry that is sexist, it is you who is sexist. Im sure feminism went out of style with the seventies stuff. Hippies died, so did the feminist movment. And as I have stated above, there really is a novel entitled Baby Island, with the exact plot specified.

As far as Lord of the Flies, there's also a female version of that situation, too. Check out John Dollar by Marianne Wiggins, about a group of preteen schoolgirls who get stranded on an island after a sea disaster and must fend for themselves... and it's every bit as brutal as Lord of the Flies, albeit going off in a different direction. Would probably also make a really powerful movie.

No want wants to see The Visit from the Red man of china, the story of 100 women in one room, all on their period. sorry, but it wont make a good movie just becuse you thought the book was good when you were 7 and still reading the baby sitters club.

What about "House of Flying Daggers"? Or "Curse of the Golden Flower"? "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"? All of these are oriental historical or semi-historical movies with a powerful fighting-woman in a leading role.

I'm sure there are more.

Of course, leaving the orient behind, there's this "Pan's Labyrinth" thing coming out really soon, focusing on a 13 year old girl living in a really ugly reality and getting tangled up into an even nastier "fantasy realm."

Sorry to tell you this but until the day comes when young women start marrying right out of high school instead of going to college and giving up their careers when they get married, then I will consider the feminist movement dead. I don't believe many of them would want do do those things.
