Am I The Only One.....?

I am I the only one that wished Frances could've ended up with Senior Martini? Vincent was so handsome and charming in this movie!

Signor Martini was married ;D Nope, I think he was supposed to be the Barney Thompson of this movie and played it beautifully.

reply

The Barney Thompson character in Pretty Woman didn't have any chemistry with Julia Roberts except as a concerned friend or father figure. This was a totally different.

No, you aren't. I think the two actors had a lot of chemistry. After seeing the cuts of the movie the directors should have seen that and ditched the wife. There was no reason for them to create an "Ed". They didn't stick with anything else in the book anyway.

it's a real book non- fiction they couldn't really change anything

I dont think they stuck to the real book. I have it, havent had a chance to read it, but correct me if I'm wrong, I think in the book she is already married. So right there they didnt stick the the original story line. I know she wouldnt end up with him but I think their characters had more chemistry.....

The book is a travel memoir, which is what the author is known for. She travels, then writes about where she's been and the people and what happened on her trip. There's no story. The book was so popular the movie-makers wanted to capitalize on the title. That's pretty much the only reason they didn't call it something else.

A similar thing happened with Mean Girls. Supposedly, it's based on the self-help book Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman (and is credited as such), but the story of Cady Heron and all the movie's characters were made up by Tina Fey, who wrote the screenplay. I don't know why she bothered to credit the book. She could've just passed it off as an original work, since the only thing the book and the film have in common is the theme of girl bullies. 

Are you kidding me? Have you read the book?
They changed everything except her name & the fact that it takes place in Tuscany.

reply

I did want her to end up with Martini but once I found out that he was married I changed my mind. But I did wonder if Martini was happy in his marriage.

And of course the BC Eagles!!!!

Martini was very personable, but there didn't seem to be any non-corny way to write his wife out of the film.

I also agree they should have ditched that damn wife. ;)

Or they could have just written him as a single man, since they didn't follow the book anyway.

I guess it's like looking at clouds. You see one thing and I see another. Peace.

reply

I'm sure that writers thought about that change, Mr. Martini being single.
But then how would you explain that they are not becaming a couple until the very last moment?

Sometimes you realized that it is not so easy to bring off a right script...

reply

Girl meets boy #1
boy likes girl
girl likes other boys
something happens
girl realizes that boy #1 likes her
girl gets boy #1
the end

This formula has been used alot in movies.

I have to admit that I was also hoping that Frances and Mr. Martini would get together - until he announced that he had a wife :-S Ack - there goes that possibility. I liked the way she did not really end up with anyone at the end.

It was refreshing to see a journey and not a destination.

reply

I always thought that to myself. She should have ended up with Martini, because the chemistry just seemed to be there. I was so depressed when I found out he had a wife and had kids, because he didn't seem to have as much chemistry with her haha.
And it's implied that she ends up with Ed who happens to be there and loves her writing, which is just so cheesy, to throw that in at the end so we could have a 'happy ending'. I would have preferred to not have the guy and have her realize she doesn't need a guy, than getting a guy at the last second from out of nowhere.

Absolutely! Most everyone on this thread appears to be requesting the same old, same old. Great to see the film take the least travelled road and head off in a different direction.

reply

I think there was an obvious attraction between the two characters but that doesn't mean they had to end up together - or even just hop in to bed for an ill-advised fling. They could be good friends without going down that particular path.

reply

That would've been too easy and obvious.

reply

I thought the same thing! They seemed to be hinting toward it the first half of the movie. Especially in scenes where they say he liked her, then he comforted her while depressed. Or maybe that's just me who wanted them together
