Flawed but hints of brilliance

1. CGI: bad, even for the time. 2003 had a lot of bad CGI. Thos was up there with Van Helsing
2. Characters: derived from an Alan Moore comic, this suffers from changes that would disappoint fans. Mina went from a scarred woman with intelligence and perseverance to a post 90's leather clsd vampire. Thanks Matrix. ALAN quartermaine became an untouchable super hero. Adding Tom Sawyer and Dorian Gray was fine. Dorian Gray was very silly though. HYDE, Nemo, and the invisible man were relatively faithful.
3. The makeup effects on Hyde were a good idea but looked like foam.

Having waited 20 years since seeing this last, I found it refreshing. It's not good, but it is different from the sequels dominating the theaters today. I enjoy the flair of the costumes and props. But, the story is so wild and the characters aren't great. They should have kept it closer to the comics and reduced the CGI. When you build such an interesting Car design, lat the audience soak ot in. Don't bog it down with CGI chase sequences where hundreds of machine gunners are missing every target and a vampire uses her bat powers to attack the enemy. That last description is exactly the thinking that hurt this movie.

I found it fun when it came out and I like to watch when I run into it on TV. It wasn't great and you can see a lot of wasted potential, but I enjoyed it. If someone made a decent script, this could, today, make a great TV show.
