Two ridiculous things about the stolen shoes case

1. A lawyer is provided free of charge to anyone who can't afford one. If Stanley was unaware of that, that must mean the police didn't read him his Miranda Rights, which means the case should've been thrown out.

2. Why would Stanley say the shoes fell out of the sky? It happened under a bridge. Any normal person would instantly realise someone threw them off the bridge.

It’s a little silly but it’s explained in the book that Stanley took the shoes falling on him as a sign from God due to his dad’s goal of inventing a way to recycle old shoes (but his path to success turns out to be inventing a foot odor cure). Most people would realize what really happened but Stanley was young and prone to magical thinking.
