YES!! That scene really upset me... I had NEVER seen that movie before, and to be honest, I really had no interest in seeing it... EVER... I mean c'mon... RATS?!?! there is NOTHING cute about rats!!! I just happen to be in the room with someone watching it, and this scene came on...I know it's just a movie but it was VERY DISTURBING to me, to see a cat(I LOVE cats) be devoured by rats... Now that damn song gives me the creeps in the worst way... I had to leave the room :/

Just saw that scene for the first time (flick is still on as I write this), and now I can't wait to see Socrates and ALL the rats (and Willard) die horrible deaths.

Very disturbing for this cat-lover. Killed any resemblance to the quirky fun of the original.

After what everyone has said on this board, i expected the cat thing to be graphic. It wasn't, in fact it was tastefully done. They could have shown the rats eating it but they didn't. Yes it was swarmed by the rats but that was it. You never saw the cat get devoured (which would have been cruel and very disturbing to watch), nor did you see the remains of the cat left on the floor of the cellar (if they were planning on shocking the audience, they would have done). It was obvious that the rats would have attacked the cat so i was prepared for that after the cat was let into the house. The one gripe i had about this movie was that Ben was made to be a evil rat. In the original, Ben wasn't that bad, otherwise they would have never made the sequel called Ben and Michael Jackson certainly wouldn't have sung the song. In the remake I didn't fell sorry for Ben at all. They made him too evil. How he just sat there and watched Socrates get murdered by Martin, was just despicable. It was like Ben wanted it to happen because he wanted to be (pardon the expression) Top Dog of the rats. I mean did you see the look on his face when socrates died, it was like he was happy.

Yes i was shocked when the Cat died, ut i was expecting it. A cat against that many rats would not have survived if they had chose to attack it. It would be like a bunch of Piranha let loose on a wounded animal.

I wouldn't say Ben was evil, but he was definitely really jealous of Socrates. I would say it was Willard's fault. Ben wasn't acting that way before Willard made a point of praising Socrates with his voice full of love, stroking him, letting him sleep in his bed - and then immediately after, look over at Ben and tell him all of the things that made him inferior to Socrates, call him names, kick him, throw him in the basement. Willard abused Ben pretty badly, so I'm sure Ben started wondering how things would be if Socrates weren't around. I think it was Willard's love he wanted more than to be Top Dog. He didn't try to become Top Dog until he realized Willard would never treat him any better, and got fed up.

lol where were u for the zillions of mice and birds and rats which cats have murdered horrifically in films, in books in life lol all cats do is kill vermin while the poor rat rarely even gets a bit of cheese but now they r finally rising up in wonderful films like harry potter and ratatouille!

It upset me a lot. Scully looked just like my dear departed cat, Jaime. If I ever watch that film again I'll forward that bit out.

This is when I was done with the movie. I'm a cat person and I'm not good with any other animals getting hurt onscreen either. I'm definitely no lover of rats but I was even uncomfortable with Willard being mean to Ben. I was trying to decide whether to finish this film so I came here to get spoiled for other scenes like this and sure enough, I find that Socrates was killed and Willard did nothing to stop it. Nah, this is going back the library unfinished. Next!

It could be easy to be upset by this movie but i just kept remembering it was a film and how hard the film crew worked to get all the shots of rats and cats doing what they were supposed to do correctly. In the 70s, it might be worrying if an animal got killed on screen but in this modern age, it's all show.

Absolutely! The cat being devoured was so heartbreaking. She tried so hard to escape and nearly succeeded. Stupid Ben!  Then again, I do have a big soft spot for cats.

I like Cats. I have a strictly indoor Feral Cat. I volunteer at a Shelter. But I like most animals. I put Bugs outside if they sneak in mostly.

I've never had a Pet Rat but some of my friends do. They seem sweet. Hell I feel bad if an Anole Lizard gets killed. (They run wild where I live) I've owned Anoles, Chameleons, Geckos, and Newts.

Tough break for the Cat and Rats in this. But take comfort in knowing it wasn't real. They all got to rest comfortably after the scene was shot.
