Anyone feel sorry for Martin Brest?

He's a talented writer/director who made a sub-par film, and because of a backlash againt Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, the film was unjustly panned and he hasn't made a film since.

Err no, the film was panned because it was terrible, plain & simple. It has a rating of 2.4 here because it sucks, not because of a 'backlash' against Lopez & Affleck.

Joe Blow can make a film that rates a 2.4, but Martin Brest is one of the most talented filmmakers out there. He doesn't make "2.4" films.

reply

Just because he is Martin Brest he can't make a 2.4 film? That's idiotic.

reply

True! But I think the director should get more chances because he is not bad if you base it on the other movies he's done, a little bit harsh I have to say.

Yeah, midnight run is one of my favorite movies too

reply

I sure feel sorry for Martin Brest. Give the guy a break already.

You've got it wrong. We should feel bad for him, but not for the reasons you say he didn't make a terrible film, he didn't even get to make the film he wanted to, this was supposed to be a dark comedy but with the tabloid sensation that was Bennifer he was forced to rework the film and supposedly about 40 minutes of footage were cut due to studio interference. Who can blame him for not even trying to make another film?

Midnight Run, Scent of a Woman, Meet Joe Black and Beverly Hills Cop.

All 4 excellent movies, in different genres.

He obviously is very talented, I am extremelly sorry for him to have his carrer destroyed because of this movie. He didn't deserve it, even more as he couldn't even do the movie he wanted to.

Ben Affleck thanked him in his Oscar speech and he said in an interview that he is one of the directors he has learned the most from...i think that says a lot since Affleck has gotten advice from tons of quality directors and has worked with a ton as well.

Affleck got an Oscar for this?

reply

He won an oscar for Argo, not sure if that was a serious question or if you were being a smartass.

Also got one from good will hunting

reply

I do as well. The guy had a great track record up until this film. I can't belive it destroyed his career

And I'm sure there's more to the story...who knows?

The whole Ben/JLo romance was bad for everyone involved
