I feel ya, the dialogue in All the Real Girls isn't any more realistic than in Garden State. Granted I've never been to N. Carolina, but I doubt the people there talk in the monotonous mumbles like they do in Green's film, and I doubt they're so dreary and trying with every inch of their face to be deep.
Was there any characters in this film who had an ounce of energy or joy to them? Not really.
I find the conversations between Braff and Portman and between the other characters in Garden State to be much more natural, they actually seem to enjoy each other's company. The girls he meets on the acid trip with his millionaire buddy are way more realistic than the meloncholy group in AtRG.
Granted I don't hate AtRG. I think it's a solid romantic story done many times before that is elevated by very good directing, acting, and writing. I think the movie falls off the rails a bit in the last 40 minutes when it drips into melodrama and constant whining and arguing(not to mention I didn't buy a virgin shut-in like Noel just randomly having sex with some guy - talk about forcing conflict in the characters). It's a fine watch, just not the work of a messiah that many of the low 20s/college crowd make it out to be.
