This film blew. Watch Garden State instead.

This was the most pretentious and boring crap I've ever seen. People fall for it just to be cutesy, but lets be serious......the pacing was lethargic, the dialogue was half assed( J.L. Godard had done much better ad libbing), but at least the cinematography was great.

If you want to see an accurate story of characters wearing their hearts on their sleeves, check out Garden State, not this pretentious garbage.

A strange assesment considering that is exactly how I felt about Garden State. I almost turned GS off after the first 15 min.

hahahaha garden state? you must be joking.

Yeah I LOVE movies where it is basically an hour and a half of close-ups of Zach Braff's wimpy face....go shoot yourself

I feel ya, the dialogue in All the Real Girls isn't any more realistic than in Garden State. Granted I've never been to N. Carolina, but I doubt the people there talk in the monotonous mumbles like they do in Green's film, and I doubt they're so dreary and trying with every inch of their face to be deep.
Was there any characters in this film who had an ounce of energy or joy to them? Not really.

I find the conversations between Braff and Portman and between the other characters in Garden State to be much more natural, they actually seem to enjoy each other's company. The girls he meets on the acid trip with his millionaire buddy are way more realistic than the meloncholy group in AtRG.

Granted I don't hate AtRG. I think it's a solid romantic story done many times before that is elevated by very good directing, acting, and writing. I think the movie falls off the rails a bit in the last 40 minutes when it drips into melodrama and constant whining and arguing(not to mention I didn't buy a virgin shut-in like Noel just randomly having sex with some guy - talk about forcing conflict in the characters). It's a fine watch, just not the work of a messiah that many of the low 20s/college crowd make it out to be.

That's funny op, because I truly haven't seen anything as "long, boring and thought it was smart" than Garden State. Not to mention Garden State is one hell of a pretentious film to begin with.

elcroquis - I agree entirely. It seems all the artsy *beep* here have given this film a higher rating than it really deserves. The middle is fine and the sex scene is good, but the first part seems vague and disjointed. Admittedly the cinematography is exquisitely good and definitely atmospheric, but the dialogue is extremely weak.

Also, you talk about realism? No living and breathing (and straight) man would refuse sex with a hot virgin, then take her to a motel and have a pillow fight. NO one.

reply

You have a very narrow-minded idea of who interprets sex in what way.

thank you, thank you, thank you.
you pretty much have the same opinion as i do.

i can honestly say i did not like this film although the cinematography was good.

i prefer garden state. :)
