Between Eminem and Brittany Murphy? It doesn't advance the plot or even character development. It pretty much brings the film to a halt for no reason.

I think they sought to develop the intimacy / relationship between Rabbit and Alex, showing the sex gave the viewer the sense that they are close. Then when we find out that Alex cheated on him with Wink, we’re as devastated and shocked as Rabbit is.
