let's not celebrate bad health

Ok, I really enjoyed the movie. It's funny, it doesnt have skinny women and expresses that you and others must accept you for who you are. Yes, real women have curves, don't look like supermodels nor have size 6. BUT the women from the film are not just curvy, they are quite overweight which is different. It is one thing having curves and another being obese. I have a friend who is overweight, probably less than the protagonist and her doctor keeps nagging her about losing weight for health reasons. Overweight people have problems with diabetes, heart diseases... or simply can not go up the stairs without going out of breath. Since we are talking about realistic individuals let me say that Ana might have a heart attack by the age of 40. It is one thing accepting who you are and another is celebrating a poor diet and bad health.

reply

Just for the record, America Ferrera (Ana) is not obese!

Truly curious - how do you know? Is there a definition of obese vs overweight? (Although I agree, I wouldn't consider her obese, either).

reply

I'm 5'5 and 160 lbs. I'm technically overweight, but that does not necessarily mean unhealthy. People usually tell me I look thinner than what I really weigh and that I'm not fat, I'm fine. I am physically active and I have low blood pressure and yes, I can go up the stairs without getting out of breath, and doctors say I am healthy. I've tried tons of diets without any success not for the sake of health but for vanity and wanting to be skinny. So, yes, overweight people can be healthy.

reply

I don't think it's clebrating bad health, more along the lines of having self esteam

You can't judge someone's health based just on their weight.

This is the problem with the so call health epidemic surrounding fat people. Being fat is not a death wish and it does not always equate to medical problems. Really, I know plenty of thin people that have more health problems than fat people. Further, can fat people have problems with diabetes and heart disease? Sure, but so can your skinny cousin, your fat uncle, and your black neighbor. These diseases are not solely brought on by being fat. Being fat doesnt even mean you have a "bad" diet. You have just made a lot of assumptions based on what you perceive as good and bad, right and wrong.

Its sad that our society uses fat people as a scape goat. Being thin does not automatically make you healthy, yet our society says nothing about it because we cant point the finger and say "I know what you are doing wrong".

You cant tell if someone is obese by looking at them, its impossible. Being fat does not make you obese. Plugging some numbers into an online calculator does not make you an obesity expert.

If you use the standard obesity calculator, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Shaq and half the NBA are obese. But we dont go walking around telling them to do something different, do we? They must be healthy because they are athletes or because they dont look fat. Just because you look fat, it doesnt mean you are obese or that you have medical problems.

For a country that has such an "obesity epidemic", its funny how life expectation has been going up since the early 90's. Deaths from cardiovascular diseases are down. Deaths in 9 out of 10 cancers related to obesity have been in steady decline for over 10 years now.

This country celebrates poor diet and poor health everyday. Britney, Paris, Nicole? I bet America Ferrara will out live them.

You are grossly mistaken in so many ways. Educate yourself.

reply

huh, it seems to me that the protagonist was just her natural weight, not fat from overeating. she was naturally chubby, not fat.

I guess a lot of white folks don't understand, most Hispanic and black woman are larger sizes and don't have the androgynous look of the Resident Evil or Girls Gone Wild girls. My wife is a plus-size 16 and is totally healthy with nowhere near having high blood pressure or cholesterol.

reply

no way...i acnt believe you just wrote that. i know many lpus and super plus sz women who could kick my ass if we went wlking or did choares or whatever. i dont thin size is ever a reflection of yor health, more like strength and stamina. where did ya get your facts?

"jenny from the block~for real"

thank god somebody said that. As much as the USA gives people *beep* for smoking, which they should, obesity is a far greater problem and we should not celebrate obesity (Mo'nique, you untalented fat b*&^%, Im looking at you and your BS beauty show celebrating fat woman for "being beautiful as they are". The only people that think you are beautiful is the fast food restaurants who make a killing off of your fat ass. Sorry to go overboard, I just hate that stupid B*$%* so much.)

Funny how you insult Mo'nique yet she's millions of dollars richer than you.

No, it isn't.

And to top if off she just sitting on her ass eating fast food all day. Ironic isnt it?

Ironic that a fat woman is sitting around eating fast food? No.

Be open-minded, but not so open-minded that your brains fall out.

Perhaps these overweight people don't care about the health risks and would prefer to stay the way they are, or prefer their current lifestyle. Who am I to condemn that? Sure, I would not want to follow their lead, but it's their life, not mine, and their dietary choices sure aren't affecting me. I'm sure they are aware of the health risks, and I don't want to insult their intelligence by reiterating something they've heard many times. The only thing that annoys me is when an overweight person always whines about their weight but never actually does anything to help...I mean, if it annoys her that much to talk about it to everyone, she should do something about it instead of just whining.

The woman in the film is hardly obese though. She looks like a woman who eats well and is a good wife and mother but is pretty healthy.
