Way too depressing

I hadn't seen this movie for quite some time so I decided to put the DVD on today. I found it to be really depressing this time around. It was nothing more than 2 hours of horrible vile characters doing nothing interesting, just constant sex and drugs. There was no character devolopment. The only character I liked a little was the young girl who kills herself over Sean. And even that was an extreme over-reaction on her part. And what's so special about Victor anyway? He's a complete jerk and he's not even that good looking (coming from a straight male by the way). I've read the book as well and it was slightly better but it's pretty much the same. I'm so glad I wasn't rich and spoiled while growing up so I didn't turn into these kind of teenagers.

Overall, it was an unpleasant re-watching of this movie. Sorry if it seems like I'm ranting. It's just my opinion.

No, I definitely agree with you. It is too depressing. I remember not liking this film, and I still don't like it. If anything, it's memorable, but only because it disturbed the heck out of me. It left me feeling empty after watching it. I gained nothing out of it. To each of his own.

I’m gay, and I agree with you.

There are cartoons on Saturday morning if you need cheering up. May I suggest Oomie Zoomie?

Grow up.

Just a peek in the life of upper class college students of the 80s. Do films have to have a happy ending all the time? I am glad I did not miss the fun and abandonment of this time. We lived life and did not read about it .

I can't say I really share the same view. I mean the film is so silly and whacked out, the only way I can possibly take it is as a comedy. It certainly has a dark tone to it at times, but I think to take any of the film too seriously isn't being fair to it, (Perhaps your view this time was only because of some personal matters that were on your mind; And somehow didn't mix well with some of the films dark aspects.). There is no real look at college kids or relationships or anything realistic in this film at all. To take it seriously is a misinterpretation in my view. I think it has some really artistically unique thinking behind it. The way that it plays with such dark issues in a comedic way makes it a somewhat daring comedy. Everything is a setup to do something crazy and just make people laugh and have an overall unique experience. The dark subject matter here and there really rattles our cages a bit, engaging us in one way or another. It's a unique film in many ways and very funny, that is, if you see the film under the right sort of light. A comedic light. I think this film is certainly worth a few watches. You're not nearly the first person to claim that the film is shallow, however I really don't agree.

My body's a cage, it's been used and abused...and I...LIKE IT!! [Evil2]

Thank you for your post, this is exactly what I think and have had a hard time articulating. I always defend this gross movie with, "but it's harmless!" But you did so much better.

THANK YOU! I watched this years ago and would never watch it again. Made me loathe my species

The beauty of the film is that everyone in it is operating under the framework of self-interest. It's a display of the dissolution of morality.

I will skip the movie then, yes.
