I co-wrote this movie

I can answer your burning Sorority Boys questions...

reply

Where did you come up with the idea for the movie?

reply

We were searching for a college comedy idea to begin with from a purely marketing standpoint. Several producers in town were wanting to do some kind of sorority movie ... and my partner actually came in with the idea one day.

reply

How closely does the finished film follow your screenplay? Was it drastically changed or is it it pretty similar?

"I tell ya, I know I'm ugly. My dog closes his eyes before he humps my leg."
-Rodney Dangerfield

reply

Yeah well if you really co wrote the movie then maybe you could tell me why you took the most basic idea thats been around for decades and tried to pass it off as your own idea? Just cause you have new jokes doesent mean youre making an original movie

reply

That was pretty cocky and rude to say to him. If he co-wrote the movie and usedthe idea.Leave it be. No need to be like that

Hey dude, I LOVE the movie.I thought it was the bomb with the 3 guys dresed as chicks.Although the sex scenes aren't my thing.

BTW when ADam was doing those girls was it real?

reply

Awesome. I love the fact that people laughed. Millions of people have seen this silly movie. That's great.

Btw, no.

reply

Why did we recycle the men in drag concept? Duh... money.

reply

Out of curiousity what is an example of a truly original movie?

reply

When the hell did they say they created this idea? They didn't. You can't make a movie that doensn't have anything that hasn't allready done. Every idea (not literally about 99%) has been done. It's about how you tell the stories, and in comedies what the jokes are. He never claimed his movie was original, and most movie maker who would say that is probably not telling the truth. I suggest you watch the South Park episode Simpson's Already Did It. It's great.

Really witty and interesting signature here.

reply

It got rewritten by the director, then we (writers) re-wrote him again, then of course he had the final say.

reply

Actually, I'm thinking of putting the "green light" copy on my website (someday) so people can see it.

reply

This movie is definitely in my top 10 favorite movies. I don't know why I love it so much, but you should know both me and my good high school friend ADORE it. We're both pretty attractive females too, not college guys... it's just fantastic. Good work!

reply

you gotta be joking...

reply

Nope. Why would I admit something like that if it wern't true? Like if I was going to lie, why not pick a better movie! Ha. I just read what people were saying and wanted to talk back.

reply

[deleted]

Attractive females huh? Sweet. I'm divorced now. Let's get a hotmail address. But be honest, you like it because of Barry Watson. ;)

reply

[deleted]

Thanks. Favorite scene, don't know. I'm the ref... so I could lie and say my scenes. Honestly, I have a lot of little moments I like. Mainly because of the talent of the cast. Okay, Rosenbaum's line "what the *beep* are you doing dipsh*t?" comes to mind. He totally improvised that line and it still makes me laugh. I like hearing people like you guys talk about it more than watching it. Rating of 5? Yeah, I guess I can agree. The finished product seemed a bit underwhelming after having the movie in my head for so long. I had higher hopes. More like a teen tootsie. But hey, it's a start. And... people who can check their thinking caps at the door have fun watching those brilliant actors having fun.

reply

wow, I was just watching this movie right now and decided to check back in... YAY! I'm sure we'd love to meet the guy who helped write one of the funniest movies EVER! I love the Wookie part- "plaque everywhere... teeth scum..."

No, we don't just like it because of Barry Watson- tho he did make the hottest girl.

haha, and we aren't supermodel tri-pi material, but still hot! ;)

Hey- so watching the credits- that would make you either Joe Jarvis or Greg Coolidge, assuming that was your name in the credits... so, how'd it feel seeing your name on the big screen (and now here on the internet by a creepy stalker who liked your movie... haha)??

reply

Hey, collegemew

I am Joe. It was bitter sweet seeing my name in the credits because I have mixed feelings about the movie. I wanted it to be better.

I love it when people like the movie - it's fun for me. It's not creepy at all.

Yeah, the wookie part was pure Harland Williams, can't take credit for that line.

where are you from?

reply

You said you had mixed feelings about the movie. What did you like and what didn't you like? Also, the movie was released around the time of another VAN WILDER, another college comedy. How would you compare the two?

"I tell ya, I know I'm ugly. My dog closes his eyes before he humps my leg."
-Rodney Dangerfield

reply

I think ultimately the studio and director went for comedy over story. Which makes the final thing seem more shallow than it already was.

When we were writing it we thought it would turn out a little more mainstream like Tootsie, but with an "R" edge, like some nudity, but funny, not gratuitous. Example, we wanted the "giant" girl to be huge and shot differently to make her seem abnormally large. Then when Adam first tries to go to the ladies room - BAM a huge naked butt is blocking his view.

And then I personally don't like the opening scene - we had pictured the "ceremony" differently, more serious in tone, darker - then the lights come up full when Dave enters, changing the mood totally to party atmosphere raging outside. I felt that the "president" had an over the top acting style that didn't fit with the other guys. Then Adam coming in on that dumb wood thing just didn't work. What was that?! That entrance felt very forced to me. The whole begining of the movie feels flat until they show in dresses at the all trim party. That was a problem in the script from the begining.

I could talk about every scene in the movie, but will spare you.

In all fairness, it turned out to be a lot funnier than the script in many places thanks to Wally and the cast.

I saw Van Wilder, but can't recall much of it now. I'd say Old School blew Sorority Boys away, however.

reply

Were you disappointed by how the film did at the box office? Why do you think it was such a flop? Sorry if you are getting sick of all my questions, it's just not every day that I get to talk with a screenwriter.

reply

Of course we wanted it to open to 30 or 40. But I still earn residuals from it. So in that sense, it was financially profitable. It wasn't enough to be considered a hit however and launch me into another tax bracket.

reply

Just so you can prove your validity.
As an article was written about the writers of this screenplay in my local paper because they're from around here...
What high school did you attend?

reply

Norman HS Go Tigers!

reply

As a fellow, Norman High graduate and current OU student. I was wondering if you had any advice for an aspiring writer?
I'd like to stay in Norman, but I'm not really sure how to find an editor, get published or on the screenplay side of things... how to properly format a screenplay and how to get it in the hands of the right people.

Honestly, you are one of my idols. Seeing as how you went to both NHS and OU and became a writer, something I have wanted to be since elementary school. I at times believed it would be impossible. But you gave me hopes. Thanks a lot!

reply

homerOae,

Let's talk off the board. I set up a temp hotmail account - email me at: [email protected] m - we can exchange info from there.

Joe.

reply

E-mail sent Joe.

I saw the movie last night, found some scene's funny, but the overall story was too moralistic. There was no surprise or subtlety about the eventual revelation the boys went through.

I think the plot might have worked in 1950, but not these days. I am not American, but I’d be very surprised if those stereotypes still exist in schools today.

Michael Rosenbaum was the star, in my opinion.

Still I found it funny, could have been funnier though.

If Joe is still reading, could I ask about the Animal House cast that appeared in the film. I assume that must have been deliberate. How hard was it to get them to appear.

reply

Not hard. But I had little to do with casting.

reply

sorry it took so long to reply! god, I've been away forever...

I'm living in Minneapolis currently, I'm undergrad at the good ol' U of M. From Wisconsin, originally.

reply

I've partied in Madison before...

reply

JOE!!

reply

I believe that Michael Rosenbaum made the hottest girl. and he also is the hottest guy, but Barry comes in a close second as a guy and girl. Is that a compliment to tell a guy that me makes a pretty girl? How do the guys feel about being called pretty in drag? I originally watched this movie because A) I like Michael, and B) I like guys-in-drag movies, like "To Wong Foo". I was kind of disturbed by the vulgarity, but the movie was overall funny.

reply

Yay Michael Rosembaum!

reply

[deleted]

Na, I get credit. In professional circles I get enough credit for writing this movie.

reply

[deleted]

My website had no index.htm for you to look at. I post scripts there for specific people to get. Someday I'll have a real website - perhaps with naked pics of myself.

The sequel is in development hell. Write Disney and complain. ;)

[deleted]

Well, luck is involved. It also helps to live and network in Los Angeles. This idea really hit with the Touchstone people and they pushed to get it made.

reply

Working on several things. Meeting and talking about ideas with various producers and studios right now. Have done some scripts that didn't get made - so you wouldn't be able to see them. Thanks for asking.

reply

[deleted]

I have an idea for a sequel to this, but I think Michael's character and Harland should come back. I'm not too crazy about Barry Watson. I love this movie, but there is NO doubt that Harland and Michael own this movie. They are the funniest guys. I actually have an idea of how they could do a sequel to this.
I really enjoy this film and think it's so funny.
Peace,

The "wookie" part was one of the funniest parts in any movie. Harland Williams really does a good Chewbacca impersonation. Also, the "Ow! She kicked me in the ba . . gina! She kicked me in the vagina!" was hilarious, and a sincere congratulations to whoever thought up that line. Also "Well, I'm addicted to porn, and I masturbate constantly . . . . . . pillow fight!" always gets me on the floor.

Congratulations for making this movie. The humour's really low-brow (mostly sex and poo humour) which would explain the overall low rating (by uptight *beep* with a stuipid sense of humour) but really, thanks for making this movie, it's awesome!

You can't argue with my logic! Well, you can, but I won't listen! - Angry Midget AKA me.

reply

there's a sequel???? :D

reply

One was written - we got paid for it - but it's never seen daylight.

reply

[deleted]

the sequel? doubtful.

reply

I am watching Sorority Boys now and just thought I'd have a quick gander on IMDB and came across this thread. Have to say I really like this film, I originally watched it because Michael Rosenbaum is in it (he's beautiful!) but ended up really loving the film and have probably watched it about 10 times now. It's a perfect film for if I just want a laugh and want cheering up. So just wanted to say good job, even if its not as you first intended at least its entertained a lot of people! and did you meet Michael Rosenbaum? If so is he a nice guy?

reply

How hard is it to break into the movie business? How did you actualy go about it? did you get jobs right out of college?

reply

It's like any other career. You need to be dedicated to it. There's a thread with an email address where you can contact me if you want to talk in more detail.

reply

Sure I met Michael. He's a great guy. I have a photo of him talking to my mom! Had to keep an eye on her. And thanks for the comments.

reply

[deleted]

Fair enough. Give me your address and I'll send your money.

reply

[deleted]

Ok, so I am watching this movie right now on comedy central. Do you get royalties for this? Also, Harland Williams as a college student? wtf!! I know you're not in charge of casting, but jesus, he's like 50 years old or somethin. Being a 19 year old myself, and fresh out of high school, a lot of the dialogue seems a bit forced. I've been working on a screenplay for a teen comedy, but with some elements of drama also, would you be willing to give it a look and perhaps pass it on to some hollywood executive types?

reply

[deleted]

Did you write this peice of *beep* because you're untalented, because you needed the money, or both?

reply

Put it this way... I still get checks every quarter. Just for getting in there and learning the business by doing it.

reply

[deleted]

The sequel was written, it was about the guys all working in the real world at their first job. And yeah, they had to dress in drag again. Good script, but it won't see the light of day in my lifetime.

reply

there's a post in this thread with a hotmail address. email me there to discuss. And yeah, Harland it too old for college.

reply

[deleted]

The writers have 100% control over the script (given that you get notes from producers and execs) until they get a director. Then we have zero control. However, we were asked to re-write our director on this once or twice as I recall. I don't know if that answers your question or not. In film, it's the director's baby. Some things in the script were better and some things came out of the actors and the director that were better than any of our jokes. It's a collaboration.

reply

omg i love this movie i am not into comedies but this is the best plus barry watson just happens to be the fittest guy ever!!! you couldnt send me his email lol LOVE THIS MOVIE XOXO

reply

The scene where the smallville dude throws the little guy out of the window and then he comes flying back in through the other window made me laugh and laugh and laugh, its right up there with the funniest scenes of all time.

reply

COX!

Funniest thing in the whole movie! Did you come up with that?

reply

yeah. :)

reply

Hi. I think this film is very funny, one of the best I've seen. I'm from Denmark, Europe, I don't know how true all the so-called stereotypes are today etc. but I think the story is good; it is true, that being pretty etc. is so imporatant sometimes, but how slutty are those girls going to the KOK house ???? I mean people can be snobbish, but they were like slutty BIG time !!! I think both Michael and Barry were EXCELLENT in this movie, and I won't want anyone else. I especially loved to see Michael in a TOTALY different part from Lex on Smallville.

I'm glad this film was made, i'm buying it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I must say I was VERY surprised by the violence shown both at the football match between the girls, but also like when guys were yelling at Michael, calling him fat and throwing like coke at him ?????? Also the whole Michael being fat in the movie, I mean he was called that by others, that's something I found silly and unrealistic, cause he's so thin, and that's just stupid to make a movie where he is called fat???????

:)

reply

[deleted]

Sorry, if that's true, I'm sorry. But it's FUNNY.

reply

Yeah, that is hilarious, especially the part about him asking for a part in a movie. I totally didn't see it coming.

Anyways, I thought Sorority Boys was a decent movie. It had its moments of hilarity and quotability (very important- Anchorman) The acting and the hot girls saved it. I'll admit I watched it at first just for the girls.

Anywho, I'm an amateur filmmaker so I'm wondering about the process of the whole thing.

Are you apart of a company or are you just an individual that whores scripts/ideas out to whoever? If you are an individual how do you setup meetings and who do you go to? Anything else you could tell me about the process would be greatly appreciated.

My friend and I have this crazy marketing scheme worked up for our idea, but I'd rather do something a bit more traditional rather than "hey look at me".

reply

There's a post with an email in this thread. Email me there. (I can't remember the address off the top of my head - but it's in there. Hotmail account)

reply

Are you for real?
if so, on what base did you guys write those 3 characters? Especially Adina, cause she gets the best lines, and she well Adam is the only one to object the idea of being in drag.

And, is there Sorority boys soundtrack at all? I'd love to know the title of the music they play during the football game scene. What's the title?

reply

[deleted]

I really feel that girls need to be treated with respect.

reply

I'm fo rizzl. We based the characters on simple broad character sketches. The womanizer, the perv, and the romantic guy. How awesome is that?

Soundtrack? Dunno. Dir picked the music I think.

reply

[deleted]

I just watched SORORITY BOYS for the first time; Comedy Crentral was airing it. I'm sorry I missed it in the theater. Neat collegiate comedy. I think it edges out REVENGE OF THE NERDS but nothing will ever top ANIMAL HOUSE. Which brings me to--
I love the mini-ANIMAL HOUSE cast reunion. How did that come to pass?

Also, thanks for letting the ladies win the crucial play. The guys may have given them their initial empowerment but they had to win this game for themselves.

The dildo duel-- whose idea was that? Bizarre but funny.

reply

You're welcome. And the mini-reunion of the A H guys was all casting choices. They made offers and got them to do it. Actors love to work just like writers! Notice the women's studies teacher was the girl from Busom Buddies?

reply

It was SHEER BRILLIANCE, mate. It must have been the best film since Weekend At Bernie's 2.

_ _ _

"Why spend your life making someone else's dreams come true?"

-- Ed Wood, the movie

reply

Ha! Thanks, mate.

reply

So did you play the part of Jake, in Possums??

"I'm the man" - Bill

reply

Jake in Possums was Greg. I'm the Ref in SB's.

reply

SB's

was that in possums?

"I'm the man" - Bill

reply

As a Sorority girl who woke up at a Frat house one morning and watched this movie I must admit that it was hysterical. I'll also admit I picked it just to watch Michael Rosenbaum (mmmm Michael), but in the end I loved the movie overall. There are parts of it that are sadly true (every frat has that one sleazy guy that tapes himself having sex, every campus has a bitchy or geeky sorority). The walk of shame made me laugh harder than anything in the world!! So did the letters of the houses.
For the people who think that Harland was too old, not everyone in University is 19, and we all have at least one alumni who hangs around past due or takes a couple of victory laps (hey in my case it's me).
I am sorry that it didn't meet your expectations as a writer, but it was still a fun movie that met my expectations for a comedy. Don't let the people who take life too seriously let you think that it wasn't worthwhile. I hope that you are able to write some more, you have a good sense of humor. Good luck on future projects.

reply

How much of the finished film was your own? And what was your favourite bit that you wrote and was in the film?

Four peas and as much ice cream as you'd like to eat.

reply

I love these movies, I saw SB on TV last night, it's hell funny.
I'm in Australia, where we don't have the whole "Frat" lifestyle, and movies like this one, and Old School etc.. make me wish we did.

I think the funniest part is the D.O.G house with the painting of the founding lady..it's still stuck in my head now. ahaha

reply

Yeah, SB was on tv on 12 June in australia. Finally! It was scheduled like a month ago, i saw it on tv guide, but it was replaced for no reason by Unbreakable. I still watch it, and it still cracks me up

reply

Plus, Unbreakable isn't funny. Some call it Unwatchable. But hey, not me. Some other people.

reply

A lot of our script ended up in the movie. We were on the set, the director treated us very well.

Big Juicy Cock is among my favorite moments. Harland improv.

Joe.

reply

You sound like my type. I've awakened in strange places before.

Thanks for the good thoughts.

reply

hey i saw just about half of the movie but from the look at it I didnt think it was up to big movie theatre standards. I think Old School is a much better film and having Harland Williams in your movie helped it out but you need somebody better with him i dont think Barry Watson cuts it and the movie at the end tries to turn into a sad"im sorry "kinda film and you just can work comedy and that together..... i think it was a enjoyable film but Celtic Pride is a personal favorite of mine and that has Dan Akroyd in it and any movie with Dan Akroyd in it plus a great fun actor with him you can work with the script with 2 guys like that..... hey if you really are the co-writer i think the plot of the film has just been used too many times not about guys trying to be girls but movies about college and Sorority the Hot Chick was about a guy being a girl it was half of the plot Sorority Boys has.....I just dont like the plot i just dont think it's that funny but as advice from me(im just a huge movie fan)next movie you right spend alot of time on it and study and get information try to write a more Original Comedy like Blues Brothers or GhostBusters..no remakes of those moviesbecause you can't beat the original but somewhere along the lines of original comedy like Bill Murray,Dan Akroyd and John Candy movies . if it is good enough you might get some actors more better known Barry Watson and Harland Williams are not well known try to get actors like Dan Akroyd,Bill Murray,Chevy Chase..these guys are the real comedians and I am a huge fan of these guys you will get a bigger crowd and older crowd of people going to see the Original Comedian's that practically made comedy

you get Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray or Chevy Chase and i will go see your movie

reply

Thanks for the tip. I will get those old farts next time.

reply

Akroyd, Murray and Chase made comedy????????? You are critizing someone for a good effort, and you dont even know what you are talking about. Where were you when Martin and Lewis, Bob Hope, Red Skelton, among many more prior to the three you mentioned were MAKING comedy. I dont deny that Akroyd, Murray and Chase are good comedians, but dont allow your dedication to them to overshadow your judgment.
Thanks for your effort Joe.
