who's your favourite character

Mine is the comical cookie loving teacher followed closely by the crazy guy who signed up for one. (Is it explained in the novel why he does? )

That character is completely different in the novel. He's not a volunteer and is actually a part of the class. Anything more would be spoilers. If you ask I'll tell, but you'd probably be best giving it a read...

Favourite is also Kitano. Probably followed by Sugimura who you probably know as guy-with-the-tracker.

I'm picking up the book.
I wonder why they changed it

Long story short they were making a long story short. The book is about 600+ pages (don't be intimidated - it doesn't feel long). The only way they coulda kept everything woulda been to make it some 3hr epic.
They cut it down, including quite a lot of back-stories and some non-essential sub-plots. You've done the right thing watching the movie first. The novel will add a lot and make you notice more of the characters.

p.s. if you have the choice, try to get the re-release - the original release (published by GOLLANCZ S.F. - red cover with two students in shadow) had quite a lot of typos, got names wrong a few times, and had some weird word choices. I've heard the newer versions fixed a lot of this.
WATCH OUT: if it gives a volume number (e.g. Vol.3) that'll be the Manga. Some fans love the Manga - but a lot (including myself) really hate it - in any case it is not the novel, so don't get them mixed up!

My favourite was always Hiroki Sugimura, the kid with the tracker. In terms of character development I also have a soft spot for poor Yuko Sakaki, the girl who tries to poison Shuya.

Shogo and Takako were both my favourites, in the novel and in the movie. I have a big soft spot for Noriko, as well, as she kind of reminds me of myself!

I'm extremely fond of Nanahara and Kiriyama. The characters as well as the actors. There are some personal reasons that don't help this (lol).
