Why was Sofia's voice "Open Your Eyes" In the Opening?

Roger Ebert complained about this too.

For those that have seen the film, we all know David signed up for this Life Continues thing in which his body is frozen, and he has a lucid dream. Everything AFTER the nightclub scene is simply a splice of his virtual reality.

However, in the beginning of the film- the first voice we hear is Penelope Cruz. "Open Your Eyes". If David hasn't met her yet, why would he be dreaming of her? Unless Cameron Crowe was trying to show that the subconscious can also predict the future.

That one little detail is the only thing that doesn't make sense to me. Everything else pretty much is explained by the Tech Support guy at the end of the film.

Another poster brought up an intriguing idea that David really died in the car crash with Julie, and this was all just a mental state of "dying"- and the brain hallucinating.

But that reels us back to the question on the table--- how is the first voice Sofia?

Has it ever happened to you where you dream you woke up, and started your day only to realize your alarm clock goes off, and you're still in bed? That is an odd feeling for sure.
So, perhaps this opening scene is commentary on the notion that life is but a dream?

It would explain it perfectly that David is already dreaming a long dream of life where he could have all his future memories already embedded within his subconscious.

What's more is we could be the same way, and not even know it. Ever wonder why you dream? It's all connected. Know it in your heart, you 'are' dreaming right now! It's not fleeting like a traditional dream, but rather it's more sophisticated, enthralling, surprising, and gripping.

Have you ever done psychedelics? That is one way to realize that you are dreaming right now. You are a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy in a dream within a dream within a dream within a dream within a dream, your consciousness is infinite, and can be copied into many simulations/dreams (like in that movie 13th floor).

Modern science even now admits that it's mathematically probable that we are living in a computer simulation! Hold onto your hats Dorthy 'cause we're not in Kansas anymore! :-)
